As the thirteenth main entry in the prestigious annual franchise, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare shifts the battlefield from traditional terrestrial warfare to the far reaches of our solar system. Breaking away from the modern and historical settings of its predecessors, this installment delivers an expansive sci-fi experience that blends high-octlam action with interplanetary conflict.
A Galactic Conflict: Story and Setting
The narrative of Infinite Warfare takes the concept of warfare far beyond Earth's atmosphere. Driven by a desperate need for resources, humanity has established colonies across various planets and moons throughout the solar system. However, this expansion comes at a cost; the inhabitants of the Mars colony have risen up, fighting for independence from Earth's control.
Players step into the boots of Captain Nick Reyes, a Tier 1 Special Operations pilot caught in the center of this interplanetary rebellion. The campaign offers a diverse range of environments, allowing players to traverse different planets, satellites, and asteroids. A central hub known as the Retribution serves as the player's base of operations, where you can track your progression, embark on main story missions, and engage in "Ship Assaults"—secondary quests that provide upgrades for your equipment, cosmetic items, and deeper lore regarding the conflict.
Innovative Gameplay Mechanics
Infinite Warfare introduces several new conditions and tools designed to redefine movement and combat in a space-faring era:
- Zero-Gravity Combat: The game features entirely new gameplay mechanics tailored for weightless environments, allowing for verticality and movement patterns never before seen in the series.
- Advanced Mobility: Players are equipped with a boost pack and a grappling hook, essential tools for navigating zero-gravity zones and maneuvering through complex space environments.
- The Jackal Fighter: Combat is not limited to foot soldiers. Players can engage in intense aerial combat using the Jackal, a transforming fighter jet that provides a unique perspective on the war. Tactical Hacking: Through an integrated wrist computer, Captain Reyes can hack into enemy gadgets and machinery, adding a layer of technical strategy to the firefights.
Multiplayer and Combat Rigs
The multiplayer component features a major overhaul to the traditional class system through the introduction of "Combat Rigs." Much like the Specialist system seen in previous titles, these rigs offer distinct playstyles via unique payloads, weapons, and abilities. Players can choose from six specialized rigs:
- Warfighter
- Merc
- FTL
- Stryker
- Phantom
- Synaptic
Zombies Mode
For fans of the cooperative experience, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare includes a completely separate Zombies mode. Moving away from the space setting, this mode takes place on Earth within a unique "horror film" reality. This narrative-driven mode features a star-studded cast of characters, including notable figures like David Hasselhoff, providing a distinct gameplay loop and story arc separate from the main campaign.
Platform Availability
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is available on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
