If you were holding out hope for the return of NFL 2K or MLB 2K, it is time to stop holding your breath. In a recent interview with Game File's Stephen Totilo, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the uncertain future of these much-loved sports franchises, and the news regarding 2K's NFL game is particularly disheartening for fans.

Why 2K's NFL Game Is Dead

According to Zelnick, the creative vision required to bring a new football title to life simply failed to materialize. When asked about the status of a potential NFL project from 2K, the CEO noted that previous attempts fell short of expectations.

“What we hoped would come to fruition creatively did not,” Zelnick stated. “Some of the stuff we tried to do didn’t work out creatively.”

While it remains unclear if this failure stemmed from business disagreements with the NFL or a breakdown in gameplay development, the result is definitive: no new football title is currently in development. The last major entry in the series was Visual Concepts' ESPN NFL 2K5, which has remained a massive fan favorite since its 2004 launch. Since that era, EA Sports has maintained an exclusive rights agreement with the NFL, leaving the Madden franchise as the primary provider of professional football simulation.

No Return to Baseball Games for Take-Two

When the conversation shifted toward a possible revival of the MLB 2K series, Zelnick was even more definitive. He effectively ruled out a return to baseball gaming, citing significant financial setbacks from previous endeavors.

“Probably not,” Zelnick said regarding a baseball comeback. “We had a tough history with MLB. It’s no secret there [that] we lost a great deal of money with them. And I don’t like losing money.”

The history of 2K's involvement in baseball is marked by both extreme dominance and a steep decline:

  • Market Dominance: The 2K Sports MLB deal ran from 2006–2012, effectively removing competitors like EA's MVP Baseball.
  • Financial Struggles: Consistent financial losses and poor critical reception plagued the later entries.
  • The End of an Era: The franchise was officially cancelled in 2014 following the release of MLB 2K13.

Potential for Future Football Innovation

Despite the current lack of a project, Zelnick left a small window open regarding the future of football. While he has essentially closed the door on baseball games, there is a slim hope that 2K could revisit the football space if a viable opportunity arises.

Because EA Sports holds exclusivity over high-end simulation-style football action, any future project from 2K would likely adopt an "arcade-y" approach. This could mirror the style of titles like MLB The Bigs, focusing on an exaggerated, over-the-top version of the sport rather than attempting to compete directly with the simulation-heavy Madden series. For now, however, fans will have to look elsewhere for their primary sports gaming fix.
