True to its word, AMD brings FSR 4.1 to Radeon RX 7000-series card owners with its latest Adrenalin drivers
AMD has followed through on its promise, delivering FSR 4.1 support to Radeon RX 7000-series graphics cards through its latest Adrenalin drivers. This update marks a significant step forward for users of RDNA 3 hardware, who now have access to the latest FSR algorithms. The 26.2.2 driver update includes this feature, though it lacks other notable additions like game support for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations. Still, the inclusion of FSR 4.1 is a major upgrade for many Team Red fans.
The Evolution of FSR: From 3 to 4.1
Compared to FSR 3, FSR 4.1 offers a noticeable leap in both AI-powered upscaling and frame generation quality. The visual fidelity is now on par with Nvidia’s DLSS 4.5, making it a compelling option for gamers looking for performance without a significant loss in image quality. This upgrade was promised back in May, with AMD committing to bring its best FSR algorithms to RDNA 3 cards by June. True to its word, AMD delivered on that promise.
Performance and Visual Trade-offs
However, users should be aware that RDNA 3-based FSR 4.1 may not deliver the same level of performance as the RDNA 4-based version. This is due to the lower matrix operations capability of RX 7000-series cards compared to the newer RX 9000-series hardware. For instance, when comparing the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 7800 XT, the RX 7800 XT may experience a performance boost but with slightly lower visual fidelity, or vice versa.
Even so, enabling FSR 4.1 with an RDNA 3 card will still result in a performance improvement. It may not be as impressive as on RDNA 4, but it’s still a welcome upgrade over FSR 3.1.
What's Next for FSR 4.1?
The Steam Machine will also receive FSR 4.1, which is a positive development for users of this compact gaming PC. For those with Radeon RX 6000-series cards, AMD has confirmed that FSR 4.1 will be coming to that platform next year. While the wait may be long, many RDNA 2 users are likely to stick with their current cards given the current PC component prices.
The June deadline for RDNA 3 support was likely tied to the release of the Steam Machine. Valve is collaborating with AMD to integrate these advanced FSR algorithms into its compact gaming system. However, the exact release date remains uncertain, with the only commitment being that the feature is “coming soon.”
