Bad news, that adorable backpack that mysteriously appeared in Final Fantasy 14 players' inventories isn't meant to be there

With the launch of Patch 7.5 for Final Fantasy XIV, some players noticed a bizarre addition to their inventories: an incredibly cute otter backpack. The item, which looks like something straight out of a high-end pop culture boutique, appeared without any mention in the official patch notes, leaving the community confused as to why this random accessory was suddenly available.

The appearance of the item was inconsistent across the player base. While some players found it sitting in their bags, others had no idea what was happening until they began experimenting with specific items. Through trial and error, players discovered that purchasing a Black Embroidered Parasol (and several other registrable accessories) would cause the otter backpack to instantly appear in their fashion accessories tab.

The cause of the Final Fantasy 14 backpack glitch

After initial speculation from the community, Square Enix has officially confirmed that this was indeed a technical error. In a recent known issues post on the Lodestone, the developers explained that the phenomenon was caused by an internal ID overlap.

According to the official statement:

  • The internal ID for the "Senor Otter pack" was mistakenly assigned the same ID as the "Black Embroidered Parasol."
  • Any player who already owned the parasol automatically gained access to the otter backpack.
  • This configuration error occurred during recent data configuration processes.

When will the otter backpack be removed?

If you have managed to snag this accidental fashion statement, enjoy it while you can. Square Enix has expressed sincere apologies for the inconvenience and has already outlined a plan to rectify the mistake.

The developers intend to correct the internal ID in an upcoming hotfix. Once that patch is deployed, the "feature" will no longer be available, and the backpack will likely disappear from player inventories.

While the origin of the otter pack remains a mystery, Square Enix noted it is "a fashion accessory that is scheduled to be released as a content reward in the future." Whether it is tied to treasure maps or an upcoming seasonal event, its current presence in your inventory is strictly a mistake. In the meantime, expect the market board price for Black Embroidered Parasols to skyrocket until the fix is implemented.
