The Blair Witch Project series will return to theaters next year, with a fresh installment due in the fall.
A release date for the as-yet untitled sequel was announced today by production company Lionsgate, via a creepy teaser posted on Instagram. The short clip confirms that the new movie will launch on September 24, 2027.
The teaser gives away little about the film, and simply shows a series of wooden mobiles listing out the movie's date — 9/24/27 — and recreating the classic Blair Witch symbol.
No story or acting credits for the film have been revealed, though this would fit with the franchise's low-fi found footage approach that keeps things mysterious. The original Blair Witch Project, launched back in 1999, kicked off a cultural sensation as audiences were presented with a film that looked authentic enough to be real.
A subsequent sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, proved less convincing. A third film, simply titled Blair Witch, then followed in 2016, but again failed to make a large impact. Whether this fourth entry will also tie into the series' existing lore remains unknown.
"The horror masterminds at Blumhouse Atomic Monster (Obsession, The Conjuring, Backrooms) remind us how scary the woods can be with this groundbreaking new chapter of The Blair Witch Project," reads an official blurb. Like Backrooms, this new Blair Witch movie will be directed by a YouTuber with experience in the genre, in this case, Dylan Clark.
"Executive producers include the 1999 film’s creators Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale, alongside original film cast members Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who join Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Steven Schneider," the blurb continues. "Directed by Dylan Clark, written by Chris Thomas Devlin and produced by Jason Blum, James Wan, Roy Lee, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath."
