Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 Are Officially Being Ported to New Platforms Next Month
Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 are set to return to new platforms in July, thanks to Iron Galaxy. The developer, best known for their work on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4, has confirmed that it will be handling the ports of these beloved Treyarch titles. While the exact PlayStation platforms for the release are still unclear, the initial leak suggested that the ports will likely be available on PS4. As a result, players will be able to enjoy the games on PS5 through backwards compatibility. However, it remains uncertain whether the PS5 will receive native ports of the titles.
The ports will include the full experience of both games, covering the campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes. Players can look forward to revisiting all the content that made these titles iconic. However, details about progress carryover, cross-play with other versions, or whether these ports will exist in isolation are still unknown.
Treyarch did not mention any upgrades for Xbox or PC versions, but it's worth noting that both Black Ops games are already available on those platforms. Xbox has long offered robust backwards compatibility, allowing players to access older titles easily. In contrast, there is no native support for PS3 games on PS4 or PS5. This move comes as a surprise, as Call of Duty has generally avoided re-releases in recent years.
The History of Call of Duty Remasters
The last major remaster of a Call of Duty title was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2016. This remastered version was a huge success, but it also caused some controversy, as it took focus away from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. In 2020, a remaster of Modern Warfare 2's campaign was released, but fans were disappointed that the iconic multiplayer mode was not included.
Since then, Activision has been cautious about similar projects, likely due to the potential to split the player base of newer Call of Duty games. This makes the upcoming ports of Black Ops 1 and 2 all the more notable, as they represent a step back into the world of re-releases for the franchise.
