Capcom Pulls Dragon's Dogma 2 Microtransactions Ahead of Dark Arisen Expansion Release

Capcom has announced plans to remove microtransactions from Dragon’s Dogma 2 ahead of the release of the Dark Arisen expansion. The company will discontinue the Deluxe Edition of the action RPG as well as “certain DLC items” on June 24. This move comes alongside a permanent discount for the digital version of the base game. The decision follows criticism of the game’s microtransaction system, which was a point of contention among players and critics alike.

In a post on social media, Capcom listed the microtransactions it was pulling from sale, including the character editor and the warp location marker. At launch in 2024, Dragon’s Dogma 2 featured over 21 microtransactions, priced from $0.99 to $4.99. These included items such as the Explorer’s Camping Kit for $2.99, a $0.99 gaol key that allows players to escape from gaol but breaks after a single use, a Portcrystal warp location marker priced at $2.99, and $0.99 Wakestones that restore the dead to life.

Controversy and Player Response

While these microtransaction items were easily obtainable in-game through simply playing, many players never felt the need to spend money on them. However, the sheer number of available microtransactions on launch day sparked controversy. Critics argued that the items made parts of the game, which were designed to challenge players in certain ways, either easier, less frustrating, or quicker. This led to backlash from the community, with modders even creating mods that allowed these items to be used in unlimited quantities.

Upcoming Updates and Expansion

Capcom has already released a major title update for Dragon’s Dogma 2, which addressed several issues and improved the overall experience. The company also plans another update at the end of August, which will focus on improving the frame-rate, adding additional save slots, and implementing a number of quality-of-life improvements. The Dark Arisen expansion, which is the focus of this change, is set to launch on October 9, 2026.
