Death Stranding Movie Targeting 2027 Shoot Date, Characters From the Games Will Appear

The Death Stranding movie is getting closer to becoming a reality, with director Michael Sarnoski (known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One) revealing to Variety that he has submitted a second draft of the script. His goal is to begin filming the project in Iceland and Northern Ireland in 2027. According to Sarnoski, this will be his next major project, after which he plans to work on a low-budget personal film. While details remain sparse, the movie is expected to be an original story set in the Death Stranding universe, created by Hideo Kojima.

Overlapping Characters and New Storylines

Sarnoski has hinted that the film will feature "overlapping characters" from the Death Stranding games, a prospect that has fans excited. He explained, "I want it to feel big, but also offbeat and character driven. This takes place in the world of the video game, but I have my own set of characters. There are some like overlapping characters that fans will be excited to see, but it’s very much my own story within this universe."

Though it's unclear how the movie's timeline will align with the games or which specific characters will appear, Sarnoski could easily bring back familiar faces from the games. Norman Reedus, who played Sam Porter Bridges, has already expressed interest in reprising his role. Other potential appearances include Lea Seydoux as Fragile or Troy Baker as Higgs, both of whom have played significant roles in the game's narrative.

Production and Future of the Death Stranding Universe

The film is being produced by A24, in partnership with Ari Aster and his producing partner, Lars Knudsen. Hideo Kojima is also deeply involved in the production, showcasing his continued commitment to expanding the Death Stranding universe. While Kojima has ideas for a third Death Stranding game, he has stated that he won't be developing it himself. Instead, he is focusing on other projects, including the upcoming animated TV series and anime film.

In the meantime, Kojima is working on two new games: OD and Physint. OD is an episodic horror game that explores different types of fear and has become a higher priority now that Death Stranding 2 has been released. Physint is a tactical espionage action game expected to be exclusive to PlayStation 6.

Sarnoski's Latest Project

Sarnoski's latest film, The Death of Robin Hood, is now available. The film has received mixed reviews, with IGN noting that it's "his most niche and least accessible film yet," but praised its "heady mix of mournful drama and murderous action" that sets it apart from other Robin Hood adaptations.
