Devil May Cry’s Anime Was Secretly A Movie Trilogy All Along, And Season 3 Is The End
Netflix has confirmed that its animated adaptation of Devil May Cry will return for a third and final season, bringing the first and only arc of the series to a close. Showrunner Adi Shankar has revealed that Season 3 will be the culmination of the story he set out to tell, and he hinted that the final season will be unlike any previous one. The trilogy, which has been designed as a movie series disguised as a television show, is now reaching its grand finale.
"This was always Dante's Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat," Shankar wrote in a recent message to fans. Season 1 was Inferno, Season 2 was Purgatorio, and Season 3 will be Paradiso. These three seasons form what Shankar calls The Force Edge Saga. From the beginning, the series was intended to be a movie trilogy, and with Season 3 on the way, the final chapter is set to deliver a unique and impactful conclusion.
Shankar also reflected on how the first two seasons have exceeded expectations. He praised both seasons for punching above their weight and "wiping the floor" with other AAA IP adaptations, many of which come with "millions of dollars" in marketing. His goal was to make American animation cool, expand Devil May Cry’s global footprint, and become a "ratings god" in the process. "I set out to prove that video game adaptations do not have to be flavorless corporate sludge assembled in a content factory by emotionally vacant brand managers who secretly loathe the source material," Shankar added.
The second season of Devil May Cry recently arrived on Netflix, continuing the story shortly after the events of the first season. With the addition of Vergil to the cast, the show has formed a trinity of characters that will drive the narrative forward. Reviews for Season 2 have been generally positive, though several plot threads remain unresolved. As Shankar has teased, the final season is expected to wrap up the story on a high note, delivering a fitting conclusion to the saga.
What To Expect From Season 3
With the final season approaching, fans are eager to see how the trilogy will conclude. Shankar has indicated that Season 3 will be different from the previous ones, focusing on delivering a blueprint for how the game's story is ultimately won. This suggests that the final season may be more intense, with larger stakes and a more cinematic approach to storytelling.
Some of the unresolved plot threads from the first two seasons may finally be tied up, offering closure to long-time fans of the Devil May Cry franchise. The show has already established a strong foundation, and with the final season on the horizon, the stage is set for a dramatic and satisfying ending.
As the third and final season of Devil May Cry approaches, the show has the potential to redefine what a video game adaptation can be. With its unique approach and cinematic storytelling, the final season promises to be a fitting end to a trilogy that was always meant to be seen as a movie in disguise.
