The long-awaited successor to Garry's Mod, s&box, has officially launched. Positioned as an open-source toolkit that aims to be a "Roblox for dads," the platform carries massive potential but has hit immediate turbulence upon release. While the community principles behind the project are commendable, the launch has been met with a wave of criticism regarding the quality of content currently flooding the ecosystem.

The Rise of AI Slop in s&box

Despite the excitement surrounding the release, Steam reviews for s&box are currently sitting at a "mixed" rating. A significant portion of the negative feedback targets one specific issue: the presence of low-effort, AI-generated slop.

Users have noted that the landing page and game hub appear to be populated with titles that seem hastily assembled using automated tools. Some of these entries, such as the bizarrely titled "Terry's Granny (Now with Co-op!)", have received poor ratings from players looking for depth. Negative reviews on Steam highlight a growing frustration with what users perceive as low-quality content:

  • Stiles: "At release there is like 90% AI generated slop which is silently accepted by Facepunch."
  • Babouche: "You will get more fun on transformice than this game full of 'AI slop' and money farm games."
  • SomeGhoosName: "It's an unoptimized mess with a 'game hub' filled with 'vibe coded' AI slop."
  • Archupump: "Filled with AI slop and low-effort gambling simulators."
  • Mado: "Filled to the brim with low quality, asset flip, braindead AI slop."

Garry Newman on Moderation and Creativity

Facepunch Studios is aware of the growing friction. While they admit they will need to deal with users employing AI in obvious, low-quality ways, the studio's founder, Garry Newman, remains optimistic about the platform's long-term health. He has stated that the goal moving forward involves a weekly update cadence driven by direct player feedback.

Addressing the concerns regarding AI-generated slop, Newman told RPS: "Low quality, obvious AI-created slop is going to be a growing problem in every creative outlet. We don't encourage using AI to be creative... but we will be taking action to promote human creativity and push obviously AI-created slop off the main page."

Regarding moderation, Newman explained that the studio prefers to react to real-world issues rather than building complex systems for problems that haven't manifested yet. He noted that they expect the community to flag problematic content, allowing them to develop manual or automated review systems as needed.

Balancing Technology and Human Input

Newman’s stance on AI is nuanced. He acknowledges its utility in programming while respecting the sensitivity of the art community. He even drew a provocative comparison to understand the balance of skill versus automation:

"If you use too much porn, you lose your ability to ejaculate using your imagination," Newman remarked. "I think you need to kind of split it 50/50: you need to use your imagination sometimes to be able to do that. It's the same with coding."

He believes that while AI is a powerful productivity tool, over-reliance on it can erode critical thinking. For the s&box ecosystem, Newman's strategy for managing the influx of automated content is simple:

"My policy on AI in s&box is I think eventually the slop will just fall to the bottom," he said. "Nobody will be interested, because they'll see [through it]."

As s&box continues its rollout, Facepunch intends to treat it much like its predecessor, Garry's Mod, learning from mistakes in real-time and refining the experience as the community grows.
