Exclusive: Magic The Gathering’s Marvel Set Just Added Another Fantastic Commander

To celebrate the impending release of this superhero-themed set, Wizards of the Coast has given us a first look at Captain America, Wings of Freedom. Below, you'll find the card as it appears in the main set, along with its Logo variant, which will be available in both Play and Collector booster packs.
A Commander Card That Feels Right at Home
Though I had little doubt that Marvel Super Heroes would bring a wealth of great Commander options, Captain America, Wings of Freedom has genuinely caught my attention. The card features flying, first strike, and ward, offering some much-needed resilience and protection—especially given its relatively low defense. Its main ability, which grants all other Hero cards you control a +X/+X boost until end of turn (where X equals Captain America’s toughness), is perfectly suited for leading a white deck focused on swinging wide with a horde of buffed-up tokens.
This Legendary Creature - Human Soldier Hero hits a real sweet spot. It’s not particularly expensive, doesn’t feel overpowered, and seems like a lot of fun to build around. In short, it’s a well-balanced card that looks great in the Commander format. It also appears to be a solid draft pick, given the variety of Hero creatures expected in the set that will benefit from his temporary buff.
A New Take on a Classic Hero
Though we’ve seen several Captain America cards join the Magic: The Gathering roster, few have depicted Sam Wilson, the current Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the MCU, Wilson took up the mantle after Steve Rogers—and Chris Evans—stepped away. Portrayed by Anthony Mackie, Sam Wilson leads the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World, set for release in 2025.
What Else to Expect from Marvel Super Heroes
Longtime Magic: The Gathering designer Mark Rosewater has hinted that the set will feature over 600 mechanically unique cards. With so many exciting elements coming together, it’s clear that this set is shaping up to be a standout release for the franchise.
