Fallout co-creator Tim Cain is signaling that a major chapter of his career may be coming to a close. For the past three years, Cain has been sharing industry insights and personal anecdotes on his YouTube channel, That Time, but he recently admitted that his reservoir of stories is running dry.
"I do seem to be winding down on my list of topics," Cain stated in a recent video. "I think I've explained the game industry as much as I can, I've told all my stories, the fun ones and the not-so-fun ones, and you've heard it all."
The end of an era for Tim Cain’s YouTube channel
Cain’s channel has served as a masterclass in game development history. He has provided viewers with a raw look at the industry, covering everything from his hiring at Interplay to the internal struggles surrounding projects like Wildstar.
Some of the most notable topics covered on his channel include:
- His mastery of THAC0 that led to his hiring at Interplay.
- The ill-fated Interplay version of Fallout 3.
- Lessons on following the "less is more" design philosophy.
- Evolution of his personal stance on RPG respecs.
Despite the wealth of knowledge shared, Cain noted that a fourth anniversary video for the channel is unlikely, suggesting he may soon pass the torch to the next generation of developer-turned-creators.
One last game before a final retirement?
While his storytelling days might be winding down, Cain isn't quite finished with game development. He teased the possibility of one final project before stepping away from the industry for good.
"I think I am gonna make one more game before I retire again for the second time, but who knows," Cain remarked.
While fans may hope for a return to his classic RPG roots, it is unlikely we will see another Fallout title or a similar massive IP from him. In January, Cain mentioned he was "over making other people really wealthy with my own creations" and expressed a lack of enthusiasm for building entirely new intellectual properties.
Instead, he may continue his current trajectory of providing specialized support to established studios. He has been working with Obsidian Entertainment, previously offering limited aid on titles such as The Outer Worlds 2. Given his history with legendary titles like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines and Pillars of Eternity, whatever project he touches in this "last hurrah" is expected to be high quality.
