Final Fantasy 14's newest expansion name almost broke the series' 12-year tradition as Yoshi-P 'really wanted' his original idea

For over a decade, Square Enix has maintained a very specific naming convention for its major content drops. From Heavensward and Stormblood to Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail, the series has leaned heavily into a distinct compound word aesthetic. However, during a recent Q&A at the North American Fan Festival, producer Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) revealed that this tradition was nearly discarded several times due to legal hurdles and creative shifts.

The Rejected Names of Final Fantasy 14

While the community has grown accustomed to the rhythmic, single-word titles, Yoshida admitted that many alternative names were floated behind the scenes. Some of these candidates would have significantly altered the identity of the expansions we know today.

According to Yoshida, the development team considered several different directions for past entries:

  • Stormblood: The team originally proposed the name Rebellion, but it was rejected for various legal reasons.
  • Shadowbringers: The title Darkbringer was toyed with before the final decision was made.
  • Endwalker: An attempt to break the compound word trend occurred here when World's End was pitched, though it was deemed impossible to use.

It is unclear which specific legal entities prevented these names from being used, but as Yoshida noted, certain titles are simply too common in the gaming and media landscape to claim exclusively.

Why Yoshi-P 'really wanted' Absolute Zero

The most striking revelation involves the upcoming expansion, Evercold. While the final title adheres to the established naming pattern, Yoshida confessed that he had a deep affinity for a different concept.

Yoshida stated that he "really wanted to go" with the name Absolute Zero. He was so invested in the idea that he had already begun visualizing what the expansion's logo would look like under that branding. Despite his personal preference, the team ultimately decided to stick to the traditional naming style.

The themes of Evercold

Even though the title changed, the core concept behind the expansion remains tied to the ideas Yoshida originally explored. The producer explained that he spent significant time thinking about the various meanings of "icing over," ranging from planetary history to the metaphorical freezing of a person's heart.

In Evercold, players will encounter different forms of ice that must be melted or destroyed to progress. This journey is designed to transform the Warriors of Light into wanderers as they navigate a world shaped by these frozen elements.

Yoshida noted that while he began narrowing down the themes for this new saga only two months after the release of Dawntrail, he maintains a clear vision for the direction the story will take. While the Final Fantasy 14 naming tradition remains intact, it is clear that the path to these iconic titles is often much more complicated than fans realize.
