Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: Release Date, Gameplay, And Everything We Know (So Far)
At long last, the Final Fantasy 7 saga reaches its definitive conclusion with the upcoming release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. More than a decade has passed since the game was first teased during the legendary 2015 Sony E3 Showcase, and it seems that this threequel is shaping up to be a massive send-off for Cloud and the rest of the Midgar crew. Drawing on the lessons learned from Remake and Rebirth, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation aims to bring the story to a satisfying close. Ahead of its 2027 launch, here's a closer look at everything we know so far about the next big Final Fantasy game.
When Will Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Be Released?
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch in Q2 2027. This marks a significant shift from the previous entries in the Remake Trilogy, which were timed exclusives for the PS5. The new release will be available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 from day one. For Nintendo Switch owners, this is a welcome development, especially considering how well Remake and Rebirth performed on the system. While both games made some graphical concessions, they still delivered a mostly stable and cinematic experience.
The Story So Far
Continuing after the events of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Revelation is the final chapter in the Remake Trilogy. While the previous games have largely followed the same story as the original Final Fantasy 7, they've also introduced reimagined characters, events, distorted timelines, and multiversal stakes. The mission remains unchanged: after the death of Aerith—though some Schrodinger's Cat shenanigans might still be at play—Cloud and his party will venture to iconic locations like Wutai on their journey to stop Sephiroth.
The former SOLDIER Elite is preparing to enact the final steps of his master plan, summoning the destructive Meteor magic to wound the planet. If successful, Sephiroth will achieve godhood by reuniting with the Lifestream and merging all alternate timelines together, over which he will ultimately rule. Can Cloud and his group finally change fate as they head toward the conclusion of the unknown journey? And let’s not forget that other loose end—Zack Fair still has a score of his own to settle with Sephiroth.
As for what comes next, game director Naoki Hamaguchi calls the threequel a definitive conclusion to the saga—but that doesn’t mean the door won’t be left open for character-specific stories in the future.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Gameplay
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation builds on the gameplay mechanics introduced in Remake and Rebirth. While both games shifted the action away from the turn-based combat of the original Final Fantasy 7, a "classic" hybrid option was also available for those feeling nostalgic. This time around, both systems are back, offering players a choice between fast-paced action or a chance to slow down the chaos and work out some tactics.
FITS Offers New Strategic Options
New to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the FITS system (Function Integrated Tactical Suitware). This is essentially a new take on classic Final Fantasy jobs, as each outfit allows its wearer to wield new skills in battle. Each character in Revelation has four FITS to choose from, and so far, Square Enix has shown off the Warrior (enhanced offensive abilities) and Black Mage (spell-focused combat) FITS suits.
A Whole New World
While Remake was a largely linear game, Rebirth introduced an open-world approach that covered major locations in Midgar. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will continue that approach, but this time you'll get to explore Midgar from the comfort of Cid’s airship. Once you find a location, you can parachute into it Fortnite-style and embark on an expedition to discover the secrets of the land. Square Enix says the world and its locations will be seamlessly connected, with new areas including the tropical rainforest of Mideel and Yuffie’s hometown in Wutai.
Rise of the Weapons
With Sephiroth posing a greater threat than ever, the planet has activated its long-dormant guardians to protect it. The classic Weapons are back, but bigger and more dangerous than ever. Indiscriminate in their destruction, Cloud and his companions will have to stand against them as they prepare to stop Sephiroth once and for all. Hamaguchi recently told GameSpot that remaking the Weapons was his favorite part of the threequel, as they've been scaled up into kaiju-sized threats for players to face off against.
Minigames Are Back, But Are Optional
Alongside Queen’s Blood and several other returning minigames, Final Fantasy fans can also try out a few new diversions off the beaten track—including a slap fight between Tifa and Scarlet. The big difference is that Square Enix is making these minigames optional, and the rewards behind each one are more cosmetic in nature. In Rebirth, some of the game's best story beats and equipment were tied to the minigames, requiring a substantial grind to unlock them.
Two New Playable Characters
While Cloud’s party is down a healer following the events of Rebirth, two new faces will be joining him on his quest. Fan-favorite characters Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine will be added to the crew, each bringing unique skills to the battlefield. Cid can control the flow of battle and unleash devastating area-of-effect attacks with his lance attacks, while Vincent can switch between lightning-fast gunplay and the ability to transform into a ferocious beast during fights.
As for the rest of the cast, the whole gang is here: Cloud, Barrett, Tifa, Yuffie, and Cait Sith. One big change to the roster is that Sephiroth has a new voice actor (Tyler Willingham), as Tyler Hoechlin was unable to reprise the role.
