Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: A Personal Journey with a Unified Ending
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that the remake trilogy's finale will feature "one singular ending" for all players, but the journey to that conclusion will offer a wealth of freedom to shape Cloud's final chapter. During a conversation with GamesRadar+, Hamaguchi elaborated on Square Enix's approach to choice in the recently announced game, emphasizing the balance between player agency and a cohesive narrative.
Like its predecessors, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, Revelation will place Cloud in situations that require him to make choices that can affect the world around him. These decisions are not just cosmetic — they will influence the story's progression and how players experience the final battle. Hamaguchi explained that the team wanted to ensure that each player's journey feels personal, mirroring the emotional depth of Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and their companions.
"This goes without saying, but our heroes, Cloud and his companions, are beloved by a lot of fans around the world," Hamaguchi said through a translator. "But when we thought about that, we didn't want to just deliver a singular storytelling experience for every single player. We wanted each player — each fan — to have a unique experience as they head on to the final battle."
The game aims to build on the freedom that allowed players to guide the story in Remake and Rebirth. For instance, instead of taking Cloud's crush on a date at The Golden Saucer, players might find themselves making choices that influence the story up to the final battle. Hamaguchi hinted that these moments will carry more weight and emotional depth in Revelation than in previous entries.
A Decade of Anticipation
The reimagined story of Final Fantasy 7 began with the launch of Remake in 2020, but fans had been waiting for this story to be told for much longer. Even when Square Enix first announced the remake trilogy in June 2015, fans had already been waiting years for confirmation. Now, as the final chapter approaches in spring 2027, Hamaguchi acknowledges that players will have a range of emotions — both positive and negative — about how the story concludes.
He noted that the final moments of the story will receive significant attention from fans, many of whom are curious or concerned about how the narrative will play out. While the ending itself will remain consistent for all players, the path to that ending may vary based on the choices made throughout the game. This could lead to different emotional experiences for each player, even as they arrive at the same conclusion.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation was announced at Summer Game Fest 2026 and is set to launch simultaneously on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in spring 2027. Additional details have been shared since the announcement, including the confirmation that the English version of Sephiroth will be performed by a new actor.
