You’ll Be Able To Use Your Fortnite Skins In Other Games, Eventually

Epic Games has unveiled a major development for the future of its metaverse ambitions, revealing that Fortnite skins and cosmetics may one day be used in other games built on the Unreal Engine 6. This revelation came during Epic’s State of Unreal presentation, where Tim Sweeney and his team outlined the roadmap for the company's expansive project. The plan is to allow developers to create games that can leverage Fortnite’s cosmetics and assets, or even design their own skins that are compatible with Fortnite.

Unreal Engine 6 is being designed with modular interconnectivity in mind, setting the stage for a broader metaverse ecosystem that developers can build upon. Rather than Fortnite being the sole focus of this vision, it will eventually serve as just one component of a larger, more diverse digital world. This shift gives developers more freedom, as they are no longer limited to the Fortnite environment, while still having the option to integrate Fortnite’s cosmetics and assets into their own games.

"We see this as the first step toward building a shared economy for smart assets: functional assets with logic and functionality that work across games, to recognize players’ time and spending in a better way," said Marcus Wassmer, an Epic development lead, in a blog post. "In the end, this isn't really a Fortnite story. It’s about proving that such a mature, complex system can work at scale—and that every game that works with these systems will immediately benefit from them."

Despite the exciting potential, this vision is still in the early stages. Epic plans to release an early-access version of Unreal Engine 6 in late 2027, with the full version expected to arrive one or two years after that. Given the complexity and scale of the project, delays are a real possibility.
