Fumito Ueda Clarifies AI Use in GenDesign's Game Development
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, renowned game director Fumito Ueda—known for creating iconic titles like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian—stated that his studio, GenDesign, does not use generative AI for the actual development of its upcoming sci-fi adventure, Gen Atlas. However, the studio does employ AI in a more administrative capacity, such as for project management tasks.
AI in Project Management, Not Creative Work
According to Ueda, GenDesign uses AI for specific functions that do not involve the creative or artistic aspects of game development. These include:
- Creating schedules for the development process
- Summarizing meeting notes
- Retrieving information on how to use new tools or technologies
Ueda emphasized that all elements of the game development process—such as design, art, and narrative—remain the work of human creators. This distinction highlights a growing trend in the gaming industry, where generative AI is increasingly used for non-creative tasks, but its use in ideation or content creation remains a point of discussion.
The Debate Around AI in Game Development
The use of generative AI in game development has sparked debate among developers and players alike. While some platforms, like Steam, require developers to disclose if AI was used in the most controversial areas—such as creating concept art, music, or voice lines—others, like the Epic Games Store, do not enforce such disclosure.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has criticized Steam’s requirement, stating it “makes no sense.” However, the conversation on social media suggests that many gamers are still interested in knowing whether AI was used in the development of a game. As a result, checking a game's Steam page for AI disclosures has become a common practice among players.
This was evident when PC Gamer and other outlets discovered that generative AI was used in the development of the upcoming Crazy Taxi remake by reviewing the game’s Steam page.
The Future of AI in Gaming
As AI technology continues to evolve, its role in the gaming industry will likely become even more nuanced. While Ueda and GenDesign are clear in their approach, the broader industry is still navigating the balance between leveraging AI for efficiency and maintaining the creative integrity of game development.
