God Of War Laufey Brings Back One Of The Best Parts Of The Previous Games
One of the most exciting reveals from the recent PlayStation State of Play was the announcement of God of War: Laufey, a new entry in the iconic series. While this game shifts the focus from Kratos to the enigmatic Laufey, it continues to honor the legacy of its predecessors. A key element returning to this new adventure is the music, composed by Bear McCreary, who has been instrumental in shaping the soundscape of the franchise.
Bear McCreary Returns to Compose God of War: Laufey
McCreary, known for his work on the 2018 and 2022 God of War games, has confirmed his return for God of War: Laufey. In a recent statement, he expressed his honor at being part of the saga once again: "I am honored to return to the God of War saga, as the composer of God of War Laufey."
The composer has been working on the project for "years" alongside a team of "stunningly talented developers, musicians, performers, and singers." His involvement not only brings back a familiar sound but also a personal connection to the series. In the 2023 expansion of God of War: Ragnarok, Valhalla, McCreary portrayed the dwarven musician Ræb, a character whose name is simply Bear spelled backwards.
A Legacy of Music and More
The initial trailer for God of War: Laufey gave fans a glimpse into the game's musical direction, and McCreary is eager to share more of his work in the coming months. In addition to this new title, he also composed the music for God of War: Sons of Sparta, released in February of this year. Outside of gaming, McCreary has built a reputation in film and television, with credits including The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, Black Mirror, Snowpiercer, The Witcher: Blood Origin, Halo, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, among others.
God of War: Laufey is currently in development for the PS5, though no official release date has been announced. The game also features a gelatinous cube, a nod to the previous entries in the series, played by Jack Quaid. Fans are undoubtedly eager to see how this new chapter will weave together the familiar and the new, all while maintaining the rich storytelling and immersive experience that the God of War series is known for.
