Rollcage Successor Grip Returns With Sequel, Grip XR

Caged Element has officially launched a Kickstarter campaign for Grip: Combat Racing's long-awaited sequel, Grip XR. A demo is now available for download on Steam, allowing players to experience the high-speed action firsthand. As a spiritual successor to the iconic Rollcage series, Grip XR promises to bring a fresh take on the fast-paced combat racing genre with enhanced mechanics and features.

A New Era of Combat Racing

Grip XR builds upon the legacy of its predecessor, offering a more refined and expansive experience. The game features big-wheeled, flippable cars capable of driving on both sides of the track, allowing for high-speed maneuvering and dramatic stunts. According to Caged Element, the driving mechanics in Grip XR are unlike anything seen in other racing games, enabling players to achieve speeds of over 1000km/h while navigating twisting and challenging tracks.

Key Features of Grip XR

  • Crank Mechanic: A new feature allowing players to flip their car left or right instantly using auxiliary boosters, enabling quick and stylish maneuvers.
  • Expanded Carkour Mode: Players can explore and create their own tracks using an advanced level editor and workshop system, similar to the one used in Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks.
  • Enhanced Weapon Variety: The sequel introduces a broader array of weapons, offering more tactical depth during races.
  • Improved Track Design: The developers have acknowledged past issues with track flow and have promised to create more balanced and skill-focused environments.

The original Grip: Combat Racing launched in 2018 after a canceled Kickstarter campaign and a period in Steam Early Access. The game was the brainchild of Rollcage enthusiast Chris Mallinson, who partnered with Robert Baker, a programmer from the original Rollcage team at Attention to Detail, to bring a new game inspired by the classic series. The original Rollcage and Rollcage Stage II were released in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and have since become cult classics among racing and action game fans.
