GTA 6 Screenshots Showcase Stunning Visuals, But Are They Real-Time?

Yesterday, Rockstar Games unveiled 63 brand new screenshots for GTA 6, each one leaving fans in awe with the level of detail on display. These images offer the most comprehensive glimpse into the game's current state, especially in the absence of Trailer 3. However, the question remains: how accurately do these images reflect the gameplay experience that players will encounter when GTA 6 launches this November?

The tech experts at Digital Foundry have conducted a detailed analysis of the screenshots, exploring what they reveal about the game's visual capabilities. Their report highlights “an unprecedented level of polish” and includes ray traced reflections. One particularly impressive detail is the visibility of a car’s engine through a reflective sheen on the underside of its hood. It’s clear that GTA 6 looks visually stunning.

Despite the impressive visuals, Digital Foundry's analysis comes with a note of caution. Author Tom Morgan believes it’s “unlikely” that the screenshots represent real-time results on any of the platforms GTA 6 is expected to launch on this November. The Xbox Series S can be safely ruled out, but even the PS5, Xbox Series X, or PS5 Pro are in question. Digital Foundry acknowledges that they cannot be certain at this stage, as they are waiting for the game's official release to provide a definitive verdict. However, the combination of pristine image quality, suggesting a native 4K or higher render, and inconsistent lighting on foreground characters raises doubts about the feasibility of these visuals on consoles.

The Origin of the Screenshots: A Mystery

If the screenshots aren’t from a console, where did they come from? One possibility is a PC version of GTA 6, which many expect to be released eventually. Digital Foundry suggests that the images may have been carefully constructed within GTA 6’s development environment to represent the “perfect shot,” where frame-rate is not a concern. This implies that the screenshots might not have been taken from the game actually running in real-time. At a stretch, they could have been generated using a photo mode, although Rockstar has yet to confirm such a feature for GTA 6.

“Incidentally, these would be easy for Rockstar to generate within the game's development environment, where the framing, character positions, and lighting could orchestrate a perfect shot – irrespective of framerate — with all settings dialled up to 11,” Morgan continued. “The ray tracing aspect is very much an expected feature on console — and indeed we have it already in GTA 5 — but as for what's possible on base PS5, Pro, and Series X, time will tell how close real time console visuals actually end up to these images.”

Of course, GTA 6 looks amazing from what we’ve seen so far, and fans expect it to push the consoles to their limits. However, Rockstar has yet to confirm performance targets for GTA 6, so we don’t know what to expect in terms of resolution and frame-rate across the consoles. What we do know is that GTA 6 features a massive open world, or, as Rockstar itself described it yesterday: “the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series yet.”
