Halo Campaign Evolved: Everything we know about Master Chief's glow-up

Halo: Combat Evolved, the groundbreaking first-person shooter that started it all, is getting a full remake in the form of Halo: Campaign Evolved. While the 2011 remaster brought some visual upgrades, this new version promises a complete overhaul with fancy graphics, refined controls, and even new story content. It's not just a retread—it's a fresh take on the original campaign that fans have loved for years.

The Halo: Campaign Evolved release date has been officially set for Tuesday, July 28, 2026. This was confirmed during a new trailer at the latest Xbox Games Showcase. Pre-ordering the Premium or Collector’s Edition will grant players five days of early access, starting on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, marking the first time a Halo game is being released on PlayStation.

What's changed in Halo: Campaign Evolved?

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full remake of the original game, but what does that mean exactly? Here's a breakdown of the changes and upgrades we know about so far:

  • Revamped visuals: Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game promises stunning graphics and a silky-smooth frame rate. The soundtrack, sound design, and voice performances have also been remastered.
  • Art style preserved: Unlike later Halo titles, the remake retains the original game's art style, avoiding the more generic sci-fi look of Halo 4 and Halo 5.
  • No toggle between old and new graphics: Unlike Combat Evolved Anniversary, players won't be able to switch between the original and new visuals.

Operation Meteorite: New Missions, New Story Content

One of the most exciting additions to Halo: Campaign Evolved is Operation Meteorite, a set of three brand-new missions featuring Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson, set a year before the main story. These missions introduce new environments, gameplay, characters, and enemies, providing fresh content while staying true to the original narrative.

The remake also brings modernised controls, including the ability to sprint and aim, which is a departure from the original Combat Evolved. While this may not appeal to everyone, it's a feature that has become expected in more recent Halo games.

Better Co-op, New Features

Fans of split-screen co-op will be happy to know that Halo: Campaign Evolved includes both two-player splitscreen for the full campaign and Operation Meteorite, as well as four-player online co-op. The game also supports crossplay and shared progression, making it easier for friends to jump in together.

However, it's worth noting that Campaign Evolved will not include the PvP multiplayer modes that made Combat Evolved so iconic. Those looking for competitive play will have to turn to The Master Chief Collection on Xbox and PC.

Trailers and Teasers

The Halo: Campaign Evolved remake was first revealed in October 2025 with a trailer and gameplay demo of the iconic mission "The Silent Cartographer". While there was some hesitation about the use of Unreal Engine 5 and specific complaints about the assault rifle's 32-bullet magazine, the overall response was positive.

At the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, a cinematic story trailer was released, offering a familiar yet exciting look at the Master Chief crash-landing on the ringworld and fighting off Covenant aliens with the help of Cortana. The Operation Meteorite trailer was also shown, highlighting the new content and showing Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson navigating lush environments and Covenant ships. The new missions look classic yet fresh, and it's clear that they're designed to seamlessly integrate with the main story.
