Helldivers Movie Loses Jason Momoa as Its Star
Jason Momoa has exited the live-action Helldivers movie. Deadline reported that the Game of Thrones alum is no longer attached to the video game-to-movie adaptation. The casting change was corroborated by The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that Sony is now on the hunt for a replacement as it moves toward its previously announced release date of November 10, 2027.
The reasons behind Momoa's departure remain unclear. This development comes as a significant setback for the Sony film, though Deadline confirms the project is "still very much alive." The movie was first announced in January 2025, with Sony promising to bring the battle for Super Earth to the big screen. This update followed the massive success of Helldivers 2, which launched in February 2024 and quickly became one of PlayStation's most successful franchises.
Despite recent challenges, Arrowhead Studios — the developers behind Helldivers — have continued to push forward with the movie. Shortly after the project was revealed, the studio confirmed it would be involved in the adaptation. In December, it was announced that Justin Lin, a veteran director known for his work on Fast and Furious, had joined the project as director.
Momoa joined the film in February of this year. The movie is being produced by Hutch Parker, with Asad Qizilbash producing via PlayStation Productions and Lin producing via Perfect Storm Entertainment. Lin remains in the director's chair as Momoa exits, but there's no clear indication of who will take on the leading role in his absence.
As Sony works to find a new star to lead the Helldivers to victory, fans can look to Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani for more insight into the film's direction. Additionally, PlayStation continues to explore new mediums for its popular franchises, including plans to bring Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Bloodborne to new platforms.
