Andrew Garfield is open to coming back as Spidey for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but it would need to be very weird.

In an interview with The Playlist, Garfield was asked about his feelings toward returning as Peter Parker. The actor was hesitant to commit to anything, but said he would do another Spidey adventure if it were "strange" and "unconventional."

“I don’t know. I really don’t know,” Garfield said. “I would need it to be very, very odd. I would need it to be very strange, and I would need it to be completely unconventional and almost — I wouldn’t say boring — but I would want it to be just completely unexpected, like a genre of Spider-Man that you’ve never seen before, that feels very left field.”

So, what does that look like exactly? Garfield himself isn't totally sure, but he did throw out one possible idea that paints a picture of how outside the box he's thinking: “Maybe like a road trip movie," he suggested.

Andrew Garfield's run as Spider-Man ended prematurely back in 2014. The actor starred in The Amazing Spider-Man duology, which wasn't as beloved or commercially successful as Tobey Maguire's trilogy. After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to meet Sony's expectations, it entered into conversations with Marvel Studios to integrate the webhead into the MCU. For a variety of reasons, the creative unit opted to drop Garfield and reboot everything, eventually selecting Tom Holland to be the next Spider-Man.

Holland has gone on to star in seven Marvel films as the wall-crawler and his latest, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, just had the biggest domestic opening weekend in history. It's expected that the film will cross the billion-dollar mark in its first four days and then barrel towards the $2 billion threshold.

Garfield did have an opportunity to reprise his role as Spider-Man and get some form of catharsis in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film brought Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Holland together in one big Spidey celebration. It allowed Garfield a form of redemption as the beloved character and even saw some reappraising his take. Ever since then, fans have been clamoring to see Garfield and Maguire return in new standalone films. It's unclear if that will ever happen, given Holland's take is thriving, but Maguire is rumored/heavily speculated to return in Avengers: Doomsday.
