Mehcad Brooks, the actor portraying the powerhouse character Jax, has opened up about the significant hurdles he faced during the production of the original film. In a recent virtual press conference ahead of the release of Mortal Kombat 2, Brooks revealed that his experience filming intense fight scenes for the first installment was far more taxing than fans might realize.

The Psychological Toll of Mortal Kombat Fight Scenes

While Jax is known as a formidable Special Forces officer, Brooks admitted he struggled with "imposter syndrome" while portraying the character's origin story. In the 2021 film, Jax undergoes a brutal transformation when Sub-Zero (played by martial arts expert Joe Taslim) freezes and rips off his arms, leading to his iconic cybernetic enhancements.

Brooks revealed that the pressure of performing complex choreography alongside elite fighters led to a personal crisis.

  • Character Study: Brooks spent six sessions with his therapist to deeply understand Jax's psyche.
  • Choreography Struggles: He found it difficult to master high-level, multi-step combat sequences.
  • Physical Toll: During rehearsals, an error led to Joe Taslim accidentally punching Brooks in the face.
  • Mental Breakdown: The actor admitted to breaking down in tears, questioning if he truly belonged in such a physical role.

"I didn't know if I belonged in the fighting scenes. So that was the hard part for me," Brooks shared, noting his tendency to overthink characters before underplaying them on screen.

Finding Confidence for Mortal Kombat 2

Despite the initial struggles with Mortal Kombat fight scenes, the actor’s mindset shifted entirely when it came time to film the sequel. The positive reception from fans regarding the first movie provided a sense of validation that Brooks needed to embrace his role as an action star.

"When I got to the second movie, I was like, ‘Oh, I got this,’" Brooks said. He noted that being asked to return for the sequel felt incredibly affirming.

The upcoming installment promises even higher stakes and more intense combat. Recent trailers suggest Jax will face off against formidable new opponents, including:

  • Jade, played by Tati Gabrielle.
  • Shao Kahn, portrayed by Martyn Ford.

With his newfound confidence, Brooks is ready to bring the full force of the Special Forces officer to the big screen once again. Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 8, 2026.
