The upcoming action prequel John Rambo has reportedly added James Franco to its ensemble cast. According to reports from Variety, the actor has joined the production in a "small role," marking what could be his first significant big-studio appearance in several years.
Production for the film, which took place in Thailand, has reportedly wrapped. While specific details regarding his character remain under wraps, his inclusion adds a layer of intrigue to the high-stakes project.
James Franco’s Return to Big-Studio Cinema
James Franco was once a Hollywood staple, recognized for high-profile performances in films such as the Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man trilogy, The Disaster Artist, 127 Hours, and Pineapple Express. However, his career underwent significant turbulence following 2018, when five women accused him of sexual misconduct.
The fallout from these allegations included several key factors:
- Four accusations involving students at his now-defunct Studio 4 acting school.
- A fifth accusation from a woman who described him as a mentor.
- A 2019 lawsuit that was eventually settled for more than $2.2 million in 2021.
While Franco initially denied the allegations, he later admitted to sleeping with students and acknowledged his actions were "wrong." These events largely kept him out of the mainstream spotlight and impacted long-standing professional relationships, including his work with Seth Rogen.
Addressing rumors regarding his absence from the industry during a recent interview with Deadline at the Cannes Film Festival, Franco stated: "It’s not true I’ve been hiding out. I've been here the last three or four years running, selling things and they treat me well and I get to go and see great movies."
The Cast of John Rambo
The John Rambo prequel features a diverse cast tasked with reimagining the origin story of the iconic action hero. Joining Franco is a lineup of established and rising talent:
- Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before), portraying a younger version of Sylvester Stallone’s legendary character.
- David Harbour (Stranger Things), stepping into the role of Commanding Officer Major Trautman.
- Yao (Sinners)
- Jason Tobin (Warrior)
- Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty)
- Jefferson White (Civil War)
- Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus)
The project is being directed by Jalmari Helander, known for his work on Sisu. While specific plot details are still being kept secret, the film promises to serve as a definitive origin story. Additionally, Marvel Studios veterans Joe and Anthony Russo are reportedly involved in the production.
A formal release date for John Rambo has not yet been announced.
