Marathon Confirms New PvE Mode Release Date, Season 3 Begins September 2026

Marathon has officially confirmed the release date for its new PvE mode, Vault Breaker, and announced that Season 3 will begin on September 22, 2026. This marks a significant step forward for the game as it expands beyond its core PvP focus.

The Vault Breaker mode will be available on July 21 as part of the next mid-season update. Players will be able to explore Cryo Archive, a map previously reserved for endgame raid-like content, and take on a series of challenging vaults. These vaults will offer unique progression opportunities, allowing players to grow stronger before facing the final challenge. The mode can be played solo or with teammates, adding a new layer of cooperative gameplay to the title.

How Vault Breaker Works

  • Sponsored Kit Requirement: To participate in Vault Breaker, players will need a special Sponsored Kit.
  • Loot Restrictions: Any gear or items found during the mode will remain behind when players exit the vault.
  • Vault Data Currency: A new in-game currency called Vault Data will be introduced. This can be used to upgrade Sponsored Kits and obtain gear usable in other modes.

Alongside Vault Breaker, Bungie is also introducing the first iteration of the Cradle Evolution system. This system will allow players to reset their maxed-out Cradle back to zero in exchange for one additional maximum Energy point and unique cosmetic items. The mid-season update will also include a variety of quality-of-life improvements, such as tuning adjustments and updated player profile stats.

Season 3 Launches in September

While Season 2 has only just begun, Bungie has already set a firm date for Season 3, which will launch on September 22, 2026. This new season will bring a wealth of new content and changes to the extraction shooter, further expanding the game's offerings.

The announcement comes as Bungie continues to work on improving Marathon's appeal. The game has faced challenges in retaining and attracting players, leading to significant changes being made to the title. With the introduction of new PvE content, there is hope that Marathon may be able to attract a wider audience beyond its core PvP player base.

Despite these updates, the game still has a long way to go in terms of popularity. A free trial was offered at the start of Season 2, but it did not significantly boost player numbers. Whether future updates will be enough to turn the tide for Marathon remains to be seen.
