Mina the Hollower is a hit for Yacht Club, having recently passed 500,000 copies sold. The gothic take on classic Game Boy adventure games goes to some appropriately dark places. The story is mostly set in stone, but you actually can get an alternate ending. You just need to plan for it and execute everything perfectly.

Spoilers follow.

In the standard ending for Mina the Hollower, Mina confronts Baron Lionel, only to have the tables turned on her by the townsfolk outlining her various "crimes" against the good people of Tenebrous Isle. He effectively makes Mina into public enemy number one, and the residents angrily chase Mina out of town.

There are more than 50 variables they can bring up in this scene, ranging from story elements like sealing the Duke in his Crypt or viewing the ribbon-cutting ceremony, to gameplay that you didn't even realize was being tracked, like defeating the Mock Moon or attacking the rabbit monster. It even dings you for breaking any lamps or candles, which is extremely difficult to avoid since you regularly break them while fighting enemies.

But YouTuber ChickenSoup (via Polygon) discovered that if you manage to finish the game while avoiding absolutely everything on the no-no list, the confrontation with Lionel plays out differently. He no longer has any crimes to confront you with, and no one in the crowd speaks up with their own grievances. So rather than turn the tables, Lionel invites you to join him. At that point Mina can reject the offer, triggering the standard ending, or accept and become his right-hand mouse. If you don't have the patience for all that you can just watch it here:

It's a dark turn for an ending that was already pretty grim. And it's fitting with the tone of Mina, since you have to work extremely hard just to get an ending that's worse. The regular ending is likely meant to be the canonical one.

But still, it's an awfully neat Easter egg in a game chock full of secrets to find. For more on how to conquer the (slightly less daunting) challenges in Mina, be sure to check out our Mina the Hollower guides hub.
