The redemption arc for MindsEye has officially entered its next phase. Developer Build a Rocket Boy (BARB) is attempting to pivot following a disastrous launch last year that was plagued by bugs, mediocre gameplay, and a lack of originality.

In an effort to regain player trust, the studio has released the Blacklisted update alongside a significant permanent price reduction. Players can now pick up the Standard Edition for $34.99 or the Deluxe Edition for $47.99.

The Blacklisted Update and Corporate Drama

The new content arrives amidst ongoing controversy surrounding BARB’s internal management. CEO Mark Gerhard has frequently alluded to corporate sabotage within the studio, even teasing that future updates might name alleged conspirators in-game.

The Blacklisted update features a new mission where players step into the shoes of Julia Black, a world-class assassin tasked with dismantling a criminal network destroying a corporation from the inside. The subtext regarding the studio's internal struggles is difficult to miss.

Key details regarding the new content include:

  • New Mission: A brief, open-ended assassination mission set in Redrock City.
  • Design Origins: Originally intended as a Hitman crossover before IO Interactive withdrew.
  • Delivery Method: Released via the integrated Arcadia platform rather than traditional DLC.
  • Playtime: The mission can be completed in under an hour.

Expanding the World of MindsEye via Arcadia

While the mission is short, Gerhard insists that this update represents the beginning of a much larger expansion plan. Instead of standard expansions, BARB is leaning heavily into Arcadia, a secondary mode within the game that hosts non-story content like races and challenges.

Arcadia also serves as the hub for user-generated content, allowing players to build their own experiences within the game's near-future setting. Gerhard noted that "Blacklisted marks the first new story campaign for MindsEye since launch," expressing excitement for what creators will do with these tools.

A Rocky Road to Redemption

The path to recovery for MindsEye has been steep. The title, heavily influenced by the Grand Theft Auto series due to the involvement of former Rockstar North boss Leslie Benzies, was widely panned upon release. Beyond technical failures, the studio has faced serious labor issues; earlier this month, staff reportedly sued BARB after management admitted to installing secret surveillance software on employee devices.

Despite the new content and lower price point, the immediate impact is unclear. SteamDB currently shows only 26 concurrent players on Steam, though total player counts across consoles remain undisclosed. Whether this MindsEye comeback can truly turn the tide remains to be seen.
