Longtime Magic: The Gathering veteran Dan Frazier has officially admitted to "painting over" existing artwork while creating a new version of The One Ring. This admission follows intense plagiarism concerns raised by the community regarding the upcoming The Hobbit set.
How Fans Spotted the One Ring Art Issue
The controversy ignited when players noticed striking similarities between the new card and the 2023 The Lord of the Rings collection. Through detailed scrutiny, fans identified several troubling details suggesting the work was not an original illustration.
Reddit user Stiggy1605 provided side-by-side comparisons that highlighted:
- Identical ring positioning in both pieces.
- Almost identical light reflections on the gold surface.
- A "mirrored" effect applied to the original art.
While the 2023 version was illustrated by Marta Nael, the new piece was credited to Frazier. Fans quickly realized that the updated imagery appeared to be the old art with text blurred out rather than a fresh, original creation.
Dan Frazier and Wizards of the Coast Respond to Plagiarism Claims
Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that the similarities between the two pieces were "not coincidental." In a social media statement, Dan Frazier expressed deep regret regarding the One Ring art controversy.
"I made a mistake, and I feel awful," Frazier stated. He explained that while looking at references online to create an iconic version of the ring, he ended up using Nael's work as a base and painting over it. "In doing so, I didn't make it my own," Frazier noted, adding that he intends to reach out to Nael "artist to artist" to apologize.
Wizards of the Coast expressed disappointment that their internal review process failed to catch the error. However, the company is taking immediate steps to rectify the situation:
- Wizards of the Coast will compensate Marta Nael for the use of her work.
- Nael will receive proper credit on all digital versions of the card.
- The company has reached out to Nael personally to apologize.
Despite the error, the company noted that they still value Frazier's long-standing contributions to the MTG community. The Hobbit set is expected to launch this August, following a year of significant expansion for the franchise. Looking further ahead, fans can also expect Marvel Super Heroes and Star Trek themed cards to arrive in 2026.
