Netflix's Devil May Cry Will End With Season 3
Netflix's Devil May Cry series has officially been renewed for a third and final season, marking the end of the adaptation. Showrunner Adi Shankar confirmed in a recent statement that this was always the plan. He described the series as a movie trilogy disguised as a television series, with each season representing a part of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
"For those of you who have been paying attention to the episode names, I have been showing you the structure the entire time," Shankar said. "This was always Dante’s Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat. Season 1 was Inferno. Season 2 was Purgatorio. Season 3 will be Paradiso. These three seasons make up The Force Edge Saga."
A Bigger Leap in Scope and Tone
Devil May Cry Season 2 was released last month and has received widespread praise. The season was given an 8/10 by IGN, with critics noting that it "goes bigger than its predecessor in every way." Shankar had previously compared the jump between seasons to the leap between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
"Season 2 is just way, way, way bigger in terms of scope and scale," Shankar told IGN. "So it's the difference between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. That's the comp. Or Halo 1 and Halo 2, where in terms of just scale and scope – orders of magnitude bigger and larger. And the tone is just completely different on top of that. The tone is very, very different, so it cuts deeper."
A Finale That Leaves Room for More
It remains to be seen if Season 3 will serve as the show's Dark Knight Rises, a movie that upped the stakes on a cataclysmic scale after Bane conquered Gotham City and threatened to destroy it with a nuclear bomb. While a nuclear threat seems unlikely in Devil May Cry Season 3, there could still be some kind of apocalyptic threat that pushes the characters to the brink.
Currently, there are no details about Season 3's plot or release date. However, since Season 1 was released in April 2025, it's possible that Season 3 could debut next spring as well. Either way, it's interesting to see that the show won't be overstaying its welcome and may, in fact, leave fans wanting more.
