New data predicts PC sales will tank in 2026 but Apple is doubling MacBook Neo production according to reports

New data suggests that PC sales are set to decline significantly in the coming years, but Apple is taking a different route by reportedly doubling its production of the MacBook Neo. This contrast highlights a broader divergence in the computing market, where traditional PC manufacturers face challenges while Apple continues to thrive with its latest notebook offering.

According to IDC, a leading research firm, PC sales are expected to drop by 11.3% in 2026. The decline is projected to continue into 2027, with the market not expected to recover to 2025 levels until 2030. The main reason for this downturn is the ongoing memory shortage, which has led to rising prices and limited product availability for many manufacturers. "The knock-on effects are significant: prices are rising and PC manufacturers are struggling to maintain full product portfolios," IDC explains.

Despite the negative outlook, IDC notes that PC shipments actually increased by 3% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. However, this growth was driven by consumers and businesses accelerating purchases ahead of anticipated price hikes and supply constraints. The firm warns that this temporary boost may not last, and a significant drop in sales is expected soon after.

Apple’s MacBook Neo is bucking the trend

The MacBook Neo has been a standout performer in this challenging market. Its popularity has even prompted IDC to revise its notebook forecast upward. The MacBook Neo has proven so successful that it's pushing the broader PC industry to respond with innovations such as new silicon, more efficient operating systems from Microsoft, and aggressive promotional pricing strategies.

Reports indicate that Apple has doubled its production of the MacBook Neo in response to overwhelming demand. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple is increasing its initial target of five million Neo units for 2026 to a full 10 million. This surge in production aligns with Apple CEO’s description of the customer response to the Neo as "off the charts."

The MacBook Neo has been particularly well-timed, launching just as PC prices have been rising. This has allowed Apple to capture market share by offering a budget-friendly option at $599 for the base model. In contrast, many other computer brands are struggling with increased costs due to the memory shortage.

Apple’s strong position in the market may also be due to its ability to negotiate better terms for components. With enough leverage, Apple can secure supplies and maintain lower prices, something that many competitors are unable to do. This advantage has helped the MacBook Neo stand out in a market where PC sales are expected to decline significantly in the near future.
