Sea of Thieves Live-Action Movie in Development, Microsoft Confirms

Microsoft is developing a live-action movie adaptation of Rare's beloved pirate adventure, Sea of Thieves. Xbox head of content Matt Booty confirmed the news to Entertainment Weekly, revealing that the project is being produced by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for directing Marvel films such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While Cretton is involved in the production, he may not be directing the film himself.

Booty elaborated on the unique nature of Sea of Thieves, stating, "The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community." This presents a challenge when translating the experience into a film. "It's not, 'Who are the main characters? What's the plot?'" Booty explained. "It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like."

Since its original launch for PC and Xbox One in 2018, Sea of Thieves has remained a popular title. It received a current-gen console launch in 2024, expanding to multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5. Over the years, Rare has continuously enhanced the game's open-world sandbox with new areas, gameplay types, story quests, and even cross-over content such as a collaboration with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and nods to the Monkey Island adventure series.

Despite recent reports of potential layoffs at Xbox, Rare has previously indicated that it plans to support Sea of Thieves for years to come. This is the first official confirmation of a movie adaptation for the game, marking a new chapter in its long-running success.

On the topic of layoffs, Entertainment Weekly reported that restructuring plans are still being finalized. Xbox leadership has stated that they want to "exhaust all other options before making these decisions." Microsoft has not officially commented on the situation.

Microsoft's involvement in a Sea of Thieves movie signals a new level of investment in the franchise. With its unique blend of cooperative gameplay and pirate-themed exploration, the game has already captured the imaginations of players worldwide. Now, fans are eager to see how that world will be brought to the big screen.
