Shang-Chi Sequel Still in Development, Says Director Destin Daniel Cretton

Five years after the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, director Destin Daniel Cretton has confirmed that a sequel is still in development. The 2021 film, which starred the charismatic Simu Liu as the titular hero, received widespread acclaim for its storytelling and character depth. While fans may have hoped for a quicker follow-up, the prospect of a Shang-Chi sequel has been delayed, with no signs of the character appearing in any subsequent Marvel movies. However, Liu will finally reprise his role in this December's Avengers: Doomsday.

Cretton has been extremely busy in the years since Shang-Chi's release. Originally set to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the project was delayed and eventually rebranded as Doomsday. With changes in Disney's priorities and the controversy surrounding actor Jonathan Majors, Cretton shifted his focus to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Meanwhile, he also developed the popular Disney+ series Wonder Man. These projects have seemingly delayed the development of Shang-Chi 2, with the character's next solo film likely to be pushed into the MCU's next phase following the climactic events of Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.

Despite the delays, Cretton expressed optimism about the future of the Shang-Chi franchise. Speaking with Deadline, he confirmed that work on the sequel is ongoing. "We're working on it," Cretton said. "The first film's reception was incredible, and we want to honor that. It's evolving in a way we're excited about."

When asked about whether the sequel would continue from where the first film left off, Cretton avoided giving specifics. "The emotional core is very important to us," he said. While the exact storyline remains under wraps, the Shang-Chi narrative is expected to continue evolving, possibly aligning with the MCU's upcoming mutant era rather than the Multiverse Saga.

Shang-Chi's Role in the MCU's Future

The Shang-Chi film concluded with the hero being called to join the Avengers, a development that will be explored further in Avengers: Doomsday. This upcoming film will see Shang-Chi teaming up with both established and new heroes, including characters from X-Men and The Fantastic Four, to face the villainous Doctor Doom.

Meanwhile, Shang-Chi's sister Xialing has taken on a new role as the head of the Ten Rings criminal organization. This plot thread remains unexplored in the MCU, and it's unclear whether it will be revisited in the sequel. The evolving nature of the Shang-Chi storyline has sparked speculation about how the character will be integrated into the MCU's broader narrative, particularly with the mutant era on the horizon.

As of now, the release date for Shang-Chi 2 remains uncertain. Fans will have to wait and see how the MCU unfolds in the coming years, with Cretton and his team working behind the scenes to bring the Shang-Chi story to life.
