Spider-Man: Brand New Day almost featured the return of recurring Marvel character Clare Temple, actress Rosario Dawson has revealed.
Speaking at GalaxyCon (thanks, Collider), the Star Wars: Ahsoka star revealed she had filmed her first scene as Temple in more than six years — but that the moment had since been left on the cutting room floor.
Dawson played hero-helping nurse Clare Temple in 32 episodes of Marvel television during its era on Netflix, and became a popular presence anchoring each series as taking place in the same universe. Introduced in Daredevil, Dawson's character then crossed over into Jessica Jones and Iron Fist, and had an even more prominent presence in Luke Cage and The Defenders.
For a time, Temple was romantically involved with Luke Cage, though the pair later broke up. (Indeed, Daredevil: Born Again has shown that he is now a father to Jessica Jones' daughter Danielle.) But while Daredevil: Born Again has featured the return of numerous other characters from the Netflix era, Temple has remained absent.
Exactly what has happened to Temple over the last few years has been a mystery — and may remain so now, without her scene in Brand New Day.
"I even shot a scene in the new Spider-Man movie, but I got cut out," Dawson is reported to have told fans during a panel discussion, without revealing why it had been removed.
This tallies with a previous report by Marvel movie tipster DanielRPK, who last year claimed that Dawson would return as Clare Temple in the upcoming Spider-Man movie, to help out a wounded hero. At the time, fans noted that the dates for Brand New Days's UK shoot matched up neatly with when Dawson was already in the country filming the second season of Ahsoka, another Disney project.
Alas, with her scene cut, it's unknown if or when we might see Clare Temple again. Daredevil: Born Again has reunited numerous Marvel characters from the Netflix era, with several more joining the party in the series' next season. But so far there's been no sign that Dawson has been present during filming, and currently it's unknown if Born Again will return for a fourth run.
Still, it's good to know that Marvel has not forgotten about the character completely — and Spider-Man: Brand New Day has plenty of other characters to squeeze in. This past weekend, fans got a first proper look at Sadie Sink's mystery character, though there's confusion over exactly what she's saying. Tom Holland has meanwhile raised eyebrows by flatly denying that Jean Grey is in the movie, following intense speculation that this is who Sink is playing.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in theaters this week, on July 31, though don't expect to Dawson in it.
