Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Villain Remains a Mystery, According to Tom Holland

Tom Holland has confirmed that the main antagonist of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still a closely guarded secret, despite several villains already being teased in trailers. During the ongoing press tour for the film (via Global Box Office), Holland emphasized that Marvel and Sony are intentionally withholding key details to maintain suspense ahead of the July 31 release. This has only fueled more speculation among fans, especially regarding the character played by Stranger Things star Sadie Sink. Although there have been persistent rumors that she is portraying a new MCU version of Jean Grey and will return for Avengers: Secret Wars, Holland’s comments suggest she is not the villain in this installment.

A Rogues' Gallery, But No Clear Antagonist

While Brand New Day features a wide array of villains, including Michael Mando’s returning Scorpion, Marvin Jones III’s Tombstone, and the ninja monk organization The Hand, the true antagonist remains unannounced. Holland described the villain as “unlike anything we’ve seen in these movies before,” hinting at a character that could surprise even the most dedicated fans. The film also includes other threats like Boomerang, Tarantula, Ramrod, and the Department of Damage Control (DODC), which has been linked to various Marvel storylines.

Some fans speculate that Boomerang could be tied to Eman Esfandi’s character, who is also MJ’s new boyfriend. However, there is no official confirmation of this connection. Meanwhile, the return of the Venom symbiote, teased in No Way Home, has also raised questions about whether it will play a role in Brand New Day.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Holland previously mentioned that Brand New Day is being developed to add “the icing on the cake in certain areas.” This includes enhancing the humor and introducing a villain plotline in a fresh way. According to Holland, the film already works well on its own, and the additional elements are meant to elevate the experience further. However, the details of how these elements will be integrated into the plot are still unclear.

As the release date approaches, fans are eagerly awaiting more information about the film’s narrative and its place in the larger Marvel universe. Holland has also been tight-lipped about his role in upcoming projects like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, only revealing that “one person” still remembers Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man. This has only added to the anticipation and mystery surrounding Brand New Day.

With the film set to debut on July 31, the focus now shifts to what surprises await audiences. Whether the villain is someone unexpected or a return of a classic Spider-Man foe, one thing is certain — the mystery is only deepening.
