Star Citizen's Single-Player Component Enters Final Development Phase

Star Citizen has recently surpassed $1 billion in player funding, a staggering milestone that reignites questions about the ambitious space MMO from Cloud Imperium Games (CIG). While the game is far from being a scam, its development timeline remains uncertain, with many players still waiting for a clear finish line. One of the most anticipated components of the project, Squadron 42, has also been plagued by delays, but according to its creator, Chris Roberts, it may finally be nearing completion.

In a recent interview with Variety during Star Citizen's DefenseCon event, Roberts revealed that Squadron 42 is "in the closing stages" of development. He described the single-player campaign as an "authored" experience that leverages the technology of the larger multiplayer game. "My pitch is, basically, you're the star of this huge blockbuster event movie, and it seamlessly goes between the storytelling and the cinematic moments to you being in control and [in] first person," Roberts said. "It feels pretty epic. I'm actually very excited for when people—because we're right at the end now, we're in the closing stages and it's coming together really well."

Roberts also mentioned that the marketing efforts for Squadron 42 are ramping up, a move that he acknowledges is difficult to manage given the transparent communication CIG has with its community. As the game approaches its anticipated launch, keeping the details under wraps has become increasingly challenging. This openness, however, suggests that we may soon hear more about Squadron 42's progress.

Rumours of Another Delay Surface Amid Optimism

Despite the positive outlook from Roberts, whispers of another delay have begun to circulate. These rumors largely stem from YouTuber and Star Citizen expert TheAstroPub, who claims to have spoken to several anonymous developers over the past few years. According to TheAstroPub, Squadron 42 entered a "some sort of beta" in February or March of this year. However, recent conversations with his sources have revealed growing concerns about the game's performance upon release.

When TheAstroPub asked whether these issues could be resolved by a theoretical October release date, the response was unexpected. "They all went 'no, it's not October, it's 2027,' " he said. "They said a specific date in 2027. I am not going to repeat that date in case it gets them into trouble."

TheAstroPub also suggested that Squadron 42 might make an appearance at this year's Summer Games Fest (SGF). His reasoning is based on a message seen on a Spanish streamer's Twitch channel, which appears to be from Star Citizen's Senior Game Designer. The message, translated from Spanish, reads: "I'll just say that I'm not missing Summer Games Fest this year just in case."

While the evidence for a SGF appearance is tenuous, the theory has some weight. Squadron 42 is the kind of game that Geoff Keighley, the host of The Game Awards, would want to showcase at SGF. Additionally, Roberts' comments about increasing marketing efforts for the game add to the speculation that a major announcement is on the horizon.

If the rumors are true, the upcoming SGF could either confirm a 2027 release date or signal yet another delay. Either way, the anticipation for Squadron 42 continues to grow, with players eager to see how this ambitious single-player campaign will finally come to life.
