Stargate SG-1 Star Michael Shanks Rallies Fans After Amazon Axes Revival, Says 'Now Is the Time to Say Something'

Stargate SG-1 actor Michael Shanks is urging fans to take action following Amazon's surprise decision to cancel its planned revival of the beloved sci-fi franchise. The news shocked the Stargate community, coming just six months after the project was first announced. While initial reports suggested the show was scrapped due to concerns it would only appeal to die-hard fans, veteran Stargate writer Joseph Mallozzi — who had been involved in the project — disputed that claim.

Shanks, known for his iconic portrayal of Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1 and its spinoffs, shared IGN's coverage of Mallozzi’s comments on X (formerly Twitter), adding his voice to those who believe the series could have attracted a broader audience. “I also dispute their claim,” Shanks said, reinforcing the idea that the show had potential beyond its core fanbase.

Fan-Led Efforts to Save the Stargate Revival

Shanks has highlighted several fan-led initiatives aimed at persuading Amazon to reconsider its decision. These include:

  • A GoFundMe campaign to fly a #SaveStargate banner over Amazon Studios’ headquarters
  • Multiple Change.org petitions
  • Calls to directly contact Amazon’s customer service to express support

The largest Change.org petition has garnered over 40,000 signatures, showing the depth of fan support for the revival.

While Amazon reportedly still sees a future for the Stargate franchise, Shanks emphasized that this particular project was a unique opportunity — one that would have involved original creators and cast members. “If you are at all interested in a Stargate show with any of the original creators or performers involved, now is the time to say something,” he wrote. “Otherwise, it really will be the end of that chapter forever. Let them know you are there.”

Though Shanks has not officially confirmed his involvement in the revival, he has been a consistent advocate for its development. Many fans believe his character, Daniel Jackson, would have made an appearance in the new series.

A Message of Support for the Stargate Community

Joseph Mallozzi expressed his disappointment earlier this week, writing, “My heart breaks for the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin Gero, the series’ showrunner, who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges… and for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.”

Amazon has yet to issue an official statement on the cancellation of the series.
