Even before its debut, Rebel Wolves is already looking toward a future that extends far beyond its first title. While the studio’s flagship RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker, is still on the horizon, CEO and co-founder Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has made it clear that he is already planning for a second IP.
Building a Saga with The Blood of Dawnwalker
Rebel Wolves has been transparent about its long-term ambitions from the beginning of the game's promotional cycle. Rather than a standalone experience, the studio views this project as the foundation of an expansive narrative saga.
During Gamescom last year, creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz hinted at the vast lore waiting in the wings:
- The world contains "hidden" areas intentionally left unexplored for future entries.
- Narrative "breadcrumbs" will be woven into the first game to tease upcoming content.
- The team already has a roadmap for the protagonist, Coen’s, journey.
The Strategy of Creating a Second IP
In a recent discussion at the studio's Warsaw headquarters, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz explained that diversifying their portfolio is essential for both creative health and player engagement. He cited Blizzard Entertainment as a prime example of successful brand management, noting how they balanced massive hits like Warcraft with fresh entries like StarCraft.
"It's smart because people need refreshment," Tomaszkiewicz noted. "And at some point we need to create a second IP."
He envisions a rotation that keeps the studio's output unpredictable:
- Release a game from the Dawnwalker IP.
- Pivot to a completely different IP to provide variety.
- Return to the original saga.
This approach aims to combat the creative burnout often caused by working on projects that feel "the same but different." By introducing new worlds, Tomaszkiewicz believes the studio can maintain high morale and keep the development team inspired.
Lessons from CD Projekt Red
Tomaszkiewicz's desire for variety is rooted in his extensive history at CD Projekt Red. A 17-year veteran of the studio, he contributed to The Witcher trilogy before serving as design director for Cyberpunk 2077. Having experienced the transition between massive, genre-defining franchises, he understands the importance of shifting gears to maintain momentum.
At Rebel Wolves, the focus remains on protecting the talent behind the technology. Tomaszkiewicz emphasized that "the team comes first," noting that creating a healthy environment is just as important as developing "cool stuff."
The Blood of Dawnwalker is scheduled to launch on September 3 later this year.
