The use of artificial intelligence in video game development remains one of the most divisive topics in the industry. During a recent press Q&A, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the game director for The Blood of Dawnwalker, addressed how his studio utilizes technology without compromising artistic integrity. While generative AI plays a role behind the scenes, the studio's goal is to support developers rather than replace them.
Using AI to Streamline Development Processes
Tomaszkiewicz revealed that generative AI voices were utilized during the early stages of development for The Blood of Dawnwalker. These tools were used strictly for testing and locking in the script before any professional recording took place.
For a massive RPG recorded in six different languages, voice-over (VO) is an incredibly expensive and time-consuming endeavor. Tomaszkiewicz explained that using AI during the iteration phase prevents costly mistakes:
- Script Testing: Using AI voices allows the team to hear how dialogue flows before committing to actors.
- Story Validation: Hearing NPCs speak helps developers identify if a story beat works or fails.
- Cost Management: Changing a script mid-production after professional recording is finished can be financially devastating.
- Preventing Burnout: Avoiding massive re-recordings reduces the need for sudden, high-pressure overtime.
“That's why we use these kind of tools in the beginning, to do iteration of the story,” Tomaszkiewicz noted. Once the script was finalized, all AI voices were removed and replaced with performances from human actors.
Supporting Human Talent Over Replacement
Beyond voice testing, Tomaszkiewicz envisions using artificial intelligence to handle repetitive, "annoying" tasks that currently occupy his staff. He suggested that instead of manual terrain checks—such as searching for holes in the map or collision errors—AI could take over these technical chores.
By automating these tedious responsibilities, the development team can focus on high-level creative work, such as refining gameplay loops, combat timing, and character development. This philosophy centers on a core principle: AI should help people work, not replace them.
No AI Assets in the Final Product
To ensure fans understand the distinction between development tools and final content, a Rebel Wolves spokesperson provided a definitive clarification regarding the game's assets.
“I want to make one thing absolutely clear: nothing that's in The Blood of Dawnwalker was created using generative AI. Nothing,” the spokesperson stated. “People with blood and flesh made this game from the beginning to the end.”
This commitment to human-made content ensures that every visual and auditory element players experience is the result of direct human creativity. The Blood of Dawnwalker is currently scheduled to launch on September 3, 2026.
