If you need a film that balances whimsical comedy-mystery elements with profound reflections on mortality, look no further. The Sheep Detectives is arguably the sweetest movie ever made about accepting death and confronting grief. Imagine if Babe had to solve the murder of Farmer Hoggett, and you will have a solid grasp of the charm this family film brings to the table.

A Whodunit with Four Legs

Set in a small English village, the story follows Shepherd George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a man who spends his evenings reading detective stories to his beloved flock. While George is gruff toward the locals, he shares a deep bond with his sheep—a connection fueled by his vegetarianism and respect for animal life.

The flock consists of various breeds, including Shetlands and Merinos, voiced by an incredible ensemble:

  • Regina Hall
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Bella Ramsey
  • Brett Goldstein
  • Rhys Darby
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Lily, the flock's brilliant leader.

The central conflict ignites when the sheep wake up to find George dead outside his trailer. While most of the flock believes sheep simply "turn into clouds," a few realize the gravity of the situation. Using the logic from the very detective stories George read to them, Lily and her companions set out to identify the killer.

Heartfelt Themes and Live-Action Hurdles

Adapted by Craig Mazin from Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel Three Bags Full, The Sheep Detectives succeeds by weaving poignant, heartstring-pulling moments into its central mystery. The screenplay explores how groups—even flocks—adopt blinders through prejudice or superstition. While the subject matter sounds heavy, the film maintains warmth through constant animal antics.

Director Kyle Balda makes his live-action debut here, and while he excels at capturing the sheep's emotional journeys, the transition from animation to live-action isn't always seamless. Some of the human character beats feel slightly strained:

  • Nicholas Braun provides nuance as Tim Derry, the town’s dim-witted cop.
  • Nicholas Galitzine plays reporter George but occasionally struggles with the script's goofier moments.
  • Emma Thompson steals her scenes as a hotshot lawyer arriving with unexpected news regarding George's will.
  • Molly Gordon adds intrigue as Rebecca, a young woman harboring her own secrets.

Despite some clunky human humor, the core of The Sheep Detectives remains its ability to tell an amusing yet profound story. It is a rare film that can tackle the complexities of trauma and justice through the eyes of a highly intelligent Merino sheep.

The Sheep Detectives arrives in theaters on May 8.
