Two More Games Are Losing Online Services Soon

Two more games are losing their online services, but the good news is that the server shutdowns aren't happening all that soon. Delisted Games spotted notices from EA and 2K informing fans about forthcoming server closures. Grid Legends will lose its online service on PlayStation and Xbox consoles on September 11 this year, but servers will stay up for the game's Steam and Switch 2 editions.

Grid Legends is riding off into the sunset. The game, which launched in 2021, has been a popular choice for racing enthusiasts, but its online multiplayer mode will soon be unavailable on major consoles. This means that players who rely on competitive play or online features will have to turn to the PC and Switch versions of the game to continue enjoying the full experience.

2K, meanwhile, announced that TopSpin 2K25's online support will go dark on December 31, 2027. 2K had previously said servers would close at the end of 2026, so players are getting an entire year more than expected. The delay gives fans more time to enjoy the game's online features, which include ranked matches and custom lobbies.

The Business Case for Closing Servers

2K said in its notice that supporting older titles while managing newer ones eventually becomes "commercially unfeasible." EA, for its part, said a similar thing, noting that, as player populations on older titles fall, "it's no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work" involved with operating them. Both companies emphasize the need to allocate resources to newer, more popular titles that generate greater revenue and engagement.

This all may be true, but anyone who is playing and enjoying Grid Legends and TopSpin 2K25 may not be thrilled by the shutdowns. In the case of TopSpin 2K25, that's the newest game in the series, so it's even more of a bummer. Fans of the game might feel that it's unfair to lose online support just as they're getting used to the latest iteration of the franchise.

For those who still want to play these games, there are a few options. Players can switch to the PC or Switch versions of Grid Legends to keep their online experience alive. As for TopSpin 2K25, it remains to be seen whether the game will have a successor that continues the online legacy. Until then, fans will have to make the most of the time they have left with these titles.
