Ubisoft Acknowledges 'Community Didn't Resonate' With Assassin's Creed Shadows Story as Much as Hoped, While Fans Praise Final Update

Fans of Assassin's Creed Shadows are celebrating the release of the final update, which they believe addresses plot holes and provides a satisfying conclusion to the game’s story. Ubisoft has acknowledged that some elements of the base game did not connect with players as intended, while long-time fans have expressed their appreciation for the recent additions.

The update, titled Black Tides, adds a set of new missions that serve as the final story chapter for Shadows, Ubisoft’s feudal Japan-set game that launched last year. While the game received mostly positive feedback for its visuals and world-building, some long-time Assassin’s Creed players felt that the story elements did not meet their expectations. The narrative was also criticized for ending abruptly, seemingly setting up plans for future expansions, although only one of those was ultimately released.

Over a year after its launch, Shadows is being brought to a close, and fans appear satisfied with the changes made to wrap up the game’s story and characters. The latest update features a powerful new Templar threat, directly references the mysterious Isu race central to the Assassin’s Creed lore, and includes numerous Easter eggs and connections to other games in the series. It also establishes a direct link to Black Flag, setting the stage for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced remake.

For Shadows, Ubisoft deliberately shifted focus away from the series' usual exploration of the Isu, likely to avoid confusing new players and to maintain a more grounded approach to the game's setting compared to previous entries like Odyssey and Valhalla, which embraced the series’ more fantastical elements. However, Ubisoft now recognizes that players who are still engaged with Shadows a year after its release want to see more of these deeper lore elements — while also acknowledging that the game initially strayed too far from its roots.

“We acknowledge some story elements from the main game that the community didn't resonate with as much as we hoped,” said associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois, who has been the public face of Shadows’ post-launch updates, in a recent blog post. “So we're taking those elements and that feedback and trying to put them to good use and address them in this final chapter. I hope the community is satisfied with where we leave our two protagonists — and hopefully get even more excited for Black Flag Resynced in the process.”

Lemay-Comtois also shared his own perspective as a player, saying he often agrees with the community’s feedback. “When they say things like 'give us more Templar stuff!' or 'give us more reasons to craft equipment builds!' it's not hard for me to agree and try to fix, add, or tweak things to meet their feedback,” he explained. “So Black Tides, which is our final story mission for Naoe and Yasuke, is how we kick that door wide open and add more Templar-focused story content to wrap things up. If you are craving Templar content and deep lore connections, you won't want to skip this one.”

On Reddit, fans have praised the update for its deeper exploration of Japanese regalia, locations, and characters from previous games. Some have also noted the update’s final boss as being appropriately challenging, which aligns with fan expectations.

The post-launch support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has concluded on a high note, with fans bidding what seems like a final farewell to Naoe and Yasuke. Lemay-Comtois expressed that while he believes the characters and Japanese setting have more potential, he is committed to wrapping up their story for now.

I know these characters and the Japanese setting have much more left in the tank and I'll always advocate for doing more with them,” Lemay-Comtois concluded, “but for now, this is the end of their story.”
