Warframe Dev Says 'No One Is Celebrating' Destiny 2 Winding Down
Destiny 2 is gradually moving toward the end of its lifecycle — its servers aren't shutting down, but Bungie has confirmed that the game will no longer receive new content beyond a major quality of life patch. This leaves it in a relatively stable but static state. While some might see this as an opportunity for celebration, especially if they're competing developers, Warframe's community director and live ops lead Megan Everett doesn't share that sentiment. In an interview with Eurogamer, she expressed her disappointment, saying, "Truthfully, it's heartbreaking. It's earth-shattering. I never thought I'd ever see the day where I'd read an article from Bungie about Destiny 2 essentially shutting down."
The Impact of Competition in the MMO Space
Everett emphasized that the absence of a strong competitor like Destiny 2 could have negative consequences for the gaming industry. "I know that people have obviously compared us in terms of being 'direct competitors' and stuff like that. But I think a game is healthy when you have competitors." Her comments highlight the importance of competition in keeping games relevant and evolving.
As someone deeply involved in the MMO space, Everett pointed to historical examples of how competition can drive innovation. She noted how World of Warcraft improved significantly when players started migrating to Final Fantasy 14. Conversely, she observed that Final Fantasy 14 has begun to adopt strategies used by other MMOs, like Evercold, to keep players engaged. "Healthy competition tends to drive games to be better than one another," she said, adding that it's hard to argue against the idea that videogames are better when they're good.
Late Support for Destiny 2
Everett also expressed frustration about the timing of the support Destiny 2 received after Bungie's announcement. "I think what's unfortunate and sad is they announced this was happening, and suddenly people are showing all this support for them. They've been getting a lot of negativity for all this time, and it's like, where was all this love?" She emphasized that it's disheartening to see a game that once had a large player base now facing an uncertain future.
Her comments were personal as well as professional. "I have close friends who play Destiny over Warframe, and ain't mad about it. We have friends over there, to see this happen to them is devastating to the industry. No one saw Destiny going away." Her words reflect the broader sentiment within the gaming community — while Destiny 2's decline is a reality, it's a loss for the industry as a whole.
Looking Ahead
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the departure of a major title like Destiny 2 raises questions about the future of the MMO genre. While Warframe and other games continue to thrive, the absence of a strong competitor could have long-term implications. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that the remaining players of Destiny 2 are treated with the respect and support they deserve.
