Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has publicly acknowledged the importance of exclusives in building a strong platform, while also emphasizing that decisions on how to approach exclusivity are still being made. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Sharma explained that Xbox is navigating the dual challenge of being a top-tier video game publisher and a growing platform. These two roles, while complementary, can sometimes present conflicting priorities.

"Look, we’re the number two publisher in the world and in order to be a great publisher, you must have your games reach large audiences to play," Sharma said. "At the same time, we’re increasingly becoming a platform, and in order to become a platform, you must have exclusive content and services. And so we’re looking at that very closely. I think that we have to be very thoughtful about each title, on how we want to think about it, and learn from some similar cases in the industry, and that’s what we’re doing."

This suggests that while Xbox is reevaluating its stance on exclusives, it may continue to make decisions on a case-by-case basis. For years, it seemed clear that major franchises like Call of Duty would be available across all platforms, while others like Halo would remain exclusive to Xbox. That perception shifted when Xbox announced the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5, sparking confusion about the company's long-term strategy.

The move raised questions about the future of exclusivity, particularly since Halo is one of Xbox's most recognizable franchises. It also came after Xbox confirmed that Fable would launch on PS5, signaling a significant shift in its approach. There have also been rumors that Gears of War: E-Day might make its way to PS5, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

All of these developments occurred before Sharma took the helm as head of Xbox. Since then, she has indicated that the company is undergoing major changes to get back on track. While many of the upcoming titles showcased by Xbox may have been in development long before her appointment, this will be her first opportunity to fully present her vision for the company's future. That vision may include a clearer definition of which titles will be exclusive to Xbox.
