Xbox's Confusing Exclusivity Criteria Now Aided by 'EXCLUSIVE' Label on Console Dashboard

Xbox has introduced a new feature to its console dashboard, clearly marking games that are exclusive to the Xbox platform. This update comes as the company continues to refine its approach to exclusivity, a strategy that has been met with mixed reactions from fans. The "EXCLUSIVE" label now appears on the Xbox Series X/S dashboard for titles like Gears of War: E-Day, which will be a console exclusive upon its release on October 6. Similarly, Clockwork Revolution will also be marked as an exclusive when it launches in 2027.

The label is designed to help users quickly identify which games are available only on Xbox, making it easier to distinguish between titles that are exclusive and those that are available on other platforms. This is particularly useful given that Gears of War: E-Day was previously planned for PlayStation 5 but has now been confirmed as an Xbox-only title. However, the game will still be available on PC, which means the label is not a complete exclusion from other platforms but a specific designation for the console version.

A Case-by-Case Approach to Exclusivity

Microsoft has emphasized that exclusivity decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, with certain types of games, such as big multiplayer games and live-service games, remaining multiplatform. This approach was outlined by Xbox's chief content officer, Matt Booty, who stressed the importance of giving players a reason to choose Xbox while also honoring existing commitments.

"We want a reason for people to get on board with Xbox, we want them to have a reason to buy an Xbox, we want them to have a reason to be an Xbox fan," Booty said in a previous statement. "At the same time, we want to reward all our players that have been with us for a long time — we know that exclusives are important, and that's why we've got Gears coming in 2026 and Clockwork [Revolution] coming in 2027."

Booty also reiterated that multiplayer and live-service games will remain available on multiple platforms. "If we've promised something to players already, we're going to honor that promise," he said. "And then — I think Asha said it — we're going to make the right decision and not the fast decision."

A New Era for Xbox Exclusives

Xbox's new approach to exclusivity has not been without its challenges. Fans have found the criteria for exclusivity decisions somewhat confusing, and it may take some time for the strategy to settle into a more defined pattern. This uncertainty has been compounded by the recent leadership change at Xbox, with newly-installed CEO Asha Sharma emphasizing that the company will first honor all previously-announced games coming to PlayStation.

For example, Halo: Campaign Evolved is still set to launch on PlayStation, and the company will look to make more unannounced games exclusive only if and when its finances improve. As a result, new Xbox titles are likely to continue being announced alongside versions for PlayStation 5 and even Nintendo Switch 2, as was the case with State of Decay 3, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 3, and Spyro: A Realm Beyond.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Sony has also made changes to its own release strategy, with PC no longer being a priority for first-party launches. This shift could have implications for how exclusivity is handled across the industry, as both Microsoft and Sony continue to refine their strategies to attract and retain players.
