Xbox Game Pass continues to push forward with the announcement of its June 2026 Wave 2 lineup, despite ongoing speculation about potential studio closures and layoffs. Microsoft has confirmed the arrival of several new titles on the service during the second half of June and early July, including EA Sports FC 26, which aligns with the World Cup season, RV There Yet?, and Winds of Arcana: Ruination. The Call of Duty: Vanguard, a 2021 title, will also join Game Pass this month. However, aside from Junkster, which launched on June 16, there are no day-one releases for the rest of June.
The announcement comes amid significant changes under new Xbox boss Asha Sharma, who has initiated a "reset" of Microsoft's gaming division. This overhaul has already led to high-profile departures, including Craig Duncan, former head of Xbox Game Studios. Reports suggest that multiple studios, including Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion, are in talks with Xbox to avoid closure, though some may face layoffs or seek independence. Double Fine has responded to the uncertainty with a brief social media post, using a single emoji to express its current sentiment.
Sharma’s memo highlighted a concerning 3% accountability margin for Microsoft's gaming business, down from previous years. She emphasized that the company has invested over $20 billion in content, platform, and hardware subsidies over the past five years, yet annual revenue has declined nearly half a billion during that time. "Going forward, this cannot continue," Sharma stated, signaling a shift in strategy. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella echoed these concerns, noting that Xbox games are more monetized on YouTube than through the platform itself, urging the team to innovate sustainably in both hardware and games.
Recent changes under Sharma, such as making Gears of War: E-Day and Clockworld Revolution console exclusives, had begun to improve fan sentiment. However, the latest developments, including potential layoffs and studio closures, mark a significant shift in perception. The changes are expected to take effect by the end of Microsoft's financial year on June 30.
