Fans of Planescape: Torment, one of the most beloved CRPGs of all time, can now dive into an exciting new expansion. Blizzard in Baator, a fan-made mod that adds new storylines, cinematics, music, characters, and locations, has finally arrived. The first act is now available, offering a substantial addition to the original game. As the developers explain in their lo-fi video announcement, this mod is "significantly bigger than Siege of Dragonspear," and as a result, it will be released in multiple parts.
What to Expect from Blizzard in Baator
The mod introduces a wealth of new content, including new quests, characters, and locations such as the Frozen Wastes of Cania. The developers have aimed to follow in the footsteps of the "greatest RPG of all time," as they call it, and the ambition is evident in the scope of the project. While the mod is available on Nexus Mods, the developers recommend downloading it from Github for a smoother installation experience.
The new quests are designed for a Nameless One who is around level 16. Players can either load an old save and continue from there or start a new game and visit Zombie #000 in the Mortuary to level up and prepare for the new content. This gives players flexibility, whether they want to experience the expansion as an add-on to their existing playthrough or start fresh.
Why Planescape: Torment Still Holds a Special Place
While I'm excited about the upcoming remakes of the original Baldur's Gate games, Planescape: Torment will always be my favorite. The game's unique setting, particularly the city of Sigil, is a standout feature. As you walk its streets, the city looms above you in a way that's both visually striking and thematically rich. The inability to look up and see the full scale of the city has always felt like a design choice that grinds my gears.
I also find the realtime-with-pause combat system to be a bit cumbersome, though I'll admit it's not as intrusive as in some other games. In the absence of an official remake, an unofficial expansion like Blizzard in Baator is a welcome addition. The temptation to replay the entire game from the beginning, leveling up organically before diving into the new content, is hard to resist. It's a chance to experience the game in a new light, with fresh challenges and stories to explore.
