Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy is a dungeon crawler role-playing game that blends sci-fi horror with the supernatural mysteries of modern Tokyo. Originally released for the PlayStation Vita in July 2014 and later for Microsoft Windows in March 2017, the game invites players to explore a world where reality fractures into deadly labyrinths. Developed by Experience Inc. and published by NIS America in the West, this title serves as a remake of the first two entries in the Generation XTH trilogy while standing as a prequel to Operation Babel: New Tokyo Legacy.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Players navigate the game from a first-person perspective, traversing trap-laden environments that range from dilapidated apartments to dangerous dimensional rifts. The gameplay is defined by its punishing nature, featuring hazards such as teleportation traps, poison gas, and environmental damage like "the floor is lava" scenarios. Resource management is critical; running out of MP or healing items can lead to immediate failure, requiring players to approach every encounter with caution.

Story and Setting

The narrative is set in the Hinowa District of Tokyo, where portions of the city suddenly transform into labyrinthine dungeons known as "Abysses." These events are classified as Hazard Cases. To combat this threat, the government establishes the XPD, a public front for the covert Xth Squad. This elite unit operates from an underground headquarters beneath Hinowa Academy, recruiting students based on their ability to perform Code Rise. Anyone who discovers the squad's existence has their memory erased.

The Xth Squad and the Abysses

The protagonist awakens in the Gakudo Sewers amidst bloody bodies and attacks from monsters known as "Variants." After being rescued by the squad captain Alice Mifune, the player joins the Code Physics Agency to form the Abyss Company. The squad must investigate kidnappings and the mysterious cult responsible for converting followers into Variants, all while maintaining their cover as ordinary high school students during the day.
