When IO Interactive and Sony announced a new 007 First Light's Controller for the PS5, fans immediately noticed a lack of classic branding. While many expected the hardware to feature James Bond's trademark barrel logo, the design appeared strikingly different. As it turns out, this discrepancy was entirely intentional.

The Mystery of the Missing Barrel Logo

Players quickly pointed out that the controller didn't evoke the iconic 007 imagery, but there was a specific reason for the change. Art director Rasmus Poulsen clarified to Eurogamer that the team wasn't looking to create a simple franchise stamp. Instead, they wanted the hardware to feel connected to the specific identity of the new game.

How 007 First Light's Controller Reflects New Themes

The design of 007 First Light's Controller is meant to mirror the aesthetic of the upcoming title rather than relying on legacy symbols. According to Poulsen, the goal was to capture "more how the UI of the game feels."

Focus on UI and Atmosphere

The creative direction for 007 First Light's Controller emphasizes specific environmental elements:

  • A direct connection to the game's UI sense.
  • A "Sun" flavor that refers back to the title.
  • An exploration of light and shadow play.

"So rather than simply making a franchise stamp, it relates to our product, in the sense that it has that UI sense--and then it has more of a, dare I say, 'Sun' flavor, referring back to the title," Poulsen stated. He added, "So there's some things about light and shadow that we wanted to play with."
