Grand Theft Auto 5 Datamining Reveals Potential Agent Protagonist Model
A character model datamined from Grand Theft Auto 5's source code has sparked a new theory that it could actually be the protagonist of Rockstar Games' cancelled open-world title, Agent. While the project was originally revealed in 2007 as a high-profile spy thriller, it remained shrouded in mystery for over a decade before vanishing from the developer's website in 2021. Recent data mining efforts suggest that traces of this elusive game may still be hiding within the files of its successor, offering fans a rare glimpse into what might have been.
The Digital Detective Work Behind the Discovery
The story behind this potential breakthrough began in May 2025 on the GTAForums community. A user named Krierra posted a series of character models unearthed from the leaked Grand Theft Auto 5 source code, which originally surfaced back in 2023, claiming they all belonged to Agent. Although the post generated some sporadic debate among forum members, it largely went unnoticed until digital sleuth XanaBax decided to conduct a deeper investigation into the identities of these models.
XanaBax systematically dismissed three of the four characters as unrelated, identifying two as non-playable characters (NPCs) from Grand Theft Auto 5 and another originating from Grand Theft Auto 4's expansion, The Ballad of Gay Tony. However, the remaining model stood out enough for XanaBax to argue that it "could actually be Agent's protagonist." The reasoning rests on several key pieces of evidence found within the code structure:
- The main node in the folder hierarchy is named "player," a standard designation for protagonists.
- The folder itself bears the name "Jimmy," which was the known codename for the Agent project.
- The model appears in images from the portfolio of a former Rockstar environment artist who worked on the cancelled game.
Technical Evidence Points to 2009 Development Era
Further digging by XanaBax uncovered technical details that strongly align with the timeline of Agent. The XMD filename for the character model includes the phrase "NorthRig," implying it was developed at Rockstar North and is dated specifically to June 2009. This date places the asset squarely in the window between Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5, a period when Agent was in active development.
The model's construction also suggests a direct lineage to previous work, as it appears to be partly based on the protagonist from Grand Theft Auto 4, Niko Bellic. According to XanaBax, the character uses "more or less" the same UV map for Niko's head, indicating that the studio may have repurposed assets while transitioning between projects.
Contextualizing the Lost Project
This discovery adds a new layer of intrigue to the history of unrealized Rockstar Games projects. Dan Houser recently explained that Agent went through "about five different iterations" before being cancelled, noting that open-world games and tightly crafted spy thrillers simply do not mix well together. In a separate revelation last September, Houser also disclosed that a planned sequel to Bully was scrapped due to internal "bandwidth issues," stating that the studio could not manage multiple ambitious projects simultaneously with their small creative team.
While Agent remains one of the most mysterious elements in Rockstar's history, these datamined findings provide tangible proof that the project left behind digital footprints. As fans continue to analyze every scrap of data from the Grand Theft Auto 5 source code, the possibility that we have finally identified the face of the spy protagonist grows more compelling.
